Hi all,
I also support using WMF hosting - I believe unified login will boost
participation in the long term.
Regards,
M.

Hello everyone,
I have been asked to forward the below message to you all about the
WikiIndaba community engagement survey (not to be confused with
Wikimania). Sorry for the tardiness on our side in sending this through to
you. There was a misunderstanding about the request to share this with
everyone.
Douglas.

*Subject:* Wiki-Indaba 2019 Community Engagement Survey
Dear community members,
The deadline for the Wiki-Indaba 2019 Community Engagement Survey has been
shifted from August 3rd to August 17th, 2018. This is because the response
to the survey was pretty low and we want to better understand what the
community expects from the local organizing committee. If you have filled
the survey, please prevail on other community members to do the same, if
you have not, the survey takes less that three (3) minutes to fill, please
do so now.
Please find below a link to the Wiki-Indaba 2019 Community Engagement
Survey.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1s7wvhWn1nqI_eFE1eww1Jl9gwD4VZq0nrrTz9TNJeo…
Please fill the survey before *Friday August 17th *so we can better
understand your preferences for Wiki Indaba 2019.
Thank you.

Hello everyone,
I mentioned in my previous email that the Wikimedia Foundation would be
sending out a few survey's following our hosting of Wikimania 2018 in Cape
Town last month. If you attended Wikimania in Cape Town this year then we
would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to fill out this
survey. This should be the 'main' or most significant survey that the
Foundation will be sending out to measure the impact of Wikimania this
year.
Best regards,
Douglas.
---
Greetings!
We hope you all have arrived home from Wikimania safe and sound! Please
fill out our survey to provide your feedback and reactions to the 2018
Wikimania in Cape Town.

This survey is for research evaluation purposes and will help conference
organizers reflect on the effectiveness and impact of the event. The
results will be used to improve future Wikimania conferences and other
large movement events. Only the survey administrator on the Learning &
Evaluation team at the Wikimania Foundation will have access to the email
address connected to the response. Results will be anonymized before being
shared with the conference organizers and an anonymous summary report will
be published to Metawiki.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses! The survey should take
about 10 to 15 minutes of your time and the link will be available until
Friday, 17 August.
This survey is conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to
additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see
the survey privacy statement

Thank you!

Hello everyone,
Now that Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town is now over the Foundation will be
sending out a few (I trust it will be less than 3) surveys out to measure
the impact of the event on those of us who attended.
The first one has been shared with me and I have been asked to share it
with all of you. This one is asks about the designs and visual identity of
the conference (logos, presentation layouts, signs, ect). If you attended
Wikimania 2018 then I encourage you to please fill it out.
You can take the survey here:

Regards,
Douglas.

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share with you all a group photograph of Wikimedia ZA

Dear all,
as many people have asked me to share the slides I and others presented at
Wikimania, and also as I represented Wikimedia-ZA at the Celtic Knot
conference, I am sharing the online doc where we workshopped before and
right up to the last minute:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aFY4uxHEHBeBIkoznzO3-TGAY3PI8XPo3Oh6RnV…
I have also cc'd Kirsten whom I met at Wikimania who wishes to join
Wikimedia-ZA's email list please.

Dear Wikimedia ZA chapter and mailing list members,
This is a quick update on Wikimedia ZA activities this year so far.
*Wikimania*
As I am sure you are well aware, Wikimania
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org>, the annual Wikipedia (and other
Wikimedia related projects) international conference will be taking place
in Cape Town in just over a weeks time. The pre-conference will run from
the 18th to the 19th July and the main conference from the 20th to the 22nd
July over the weekend.
Wikimedia ZA has been intimately involved in hosting and organising this
event with the Wikimedia Foundation. We are expecting around 650 attendees
at this years event. The event is open to the public with a special call
out to local Wikipedia editors. So if you are in Cape Town please do join
us. We will have walk in registrations. South African citizens are
entitled to a 50% discount.
I also still have a very limited number of complementary tickets for
veteran Wikipedia editors which I will give out on a first come first serve
basis to local Wikipedia editors. Just please give me your Wikipedia user
name so I can check your edit activity.
Some events, such as the Water Sustainability edit-a-thon
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_edit-a-thon>, do not
require a registration to join so check out the program
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program>for anything that might
interest you.
*Copyright Bill*
I have just submitted Wikimedia ZA's commentary to the South African
Parliament that supports calls for both Freedom of Panorama and Fair Use.
I have attached our submission to this email. The call from parliament was
for members of the public to comment on specific sections of the draft 2
version of the amended Copyright Bill that is expected to go before
Parliament later this year.
Wikimedia ZA supports changes to sections 15 (1) that will replace wording
that will essentially function as a Freedom of Panorama clause. Even if
that term is not used in the bill.
There has also been dramatic movement in the bill replacing the old,
confusing, and outdated Fair Dealing wording with an updated Fair Use
policy that is more open to innovation and easier to understand for
laypeople such as your average Wikipedia editor.
I have attached both the draft bill being looked at right now, the call out
for comments as well as Wikimedia ZA's submission to parliament.
If you wish to submit a comment in support of Freedom of Panorama and/or
Fair Use, or on any other specific elements of the draft bill (in support
or against) then please submit them to Andre Hermans <
ahermans(a)parliament.gov.za> by the 18th July 2018.
Regards,
Douglas.
