Dear all,
We are hosting once again Wiki Loves Africa in South Africa 2023. "Wiki
Loves Africa'' is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can
contribute media that relates to that year's theme to Wikimedia Commons
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Wikimedia_Commons>for use on Wikipedia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Wikipedia> and other project websites of
the Wikimedia Foundation. Wiki Loves Africa encourages participants to
contribute media (photographs, video, and audio) that illustrate the
specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes. Each year's
theme is chosen by the community to be a universal, visually-rich, and
culturally-specific topic (for example, markets, rites of passage,
festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life,
notable persons, etc). You are encouraged to submit any photos of' Climate
and Weather
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2023_in_South_…>
in South Africa between 1st of March and 30th April 2023. By submitting
your photos to the competition, you share pictures of climate and weather
in South Africa with the rest of the world to enjoy through the internet.
This competition can be great for aspiring photographers, photography
students, or anyone who is interested in photography, but it is still open
to anyone who wants to partake in the competition.
Best regards,
Hello everyone,
You may know Wikimedia South Africa has been involved in copyright
amendment bill advocacy work for the past eight or so years now. If you are
free and interested to learn more and you are based in Cape Town we, along
with many other groups, will be presenting to the Western Cape Legislature
tomorrow on the issue. Wikimedia South Africa supports the Copyright
Amendment bill because it contains Freedom of Panorama and Fair Use, both
are copyright related legal doctrines that make editing Wikipedia easier.
We are especially strong supporters of Freedom of Panorama as it will allow
us to upload our own photographs of public works (such as public monuments
and the facades of buildings) on to Wikimedia commons where they can then
be used on Wikipedia.
To learn more about the chapter's advocacy efforts you can checkout the
page on meta wiki here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_South_Africa/Copyright_Amendment_…
I am led to believe that this event is open to the public should you wish
to attend but you are advised to come early to get a seat.
Regards,
Douglas Scott
