During the past week, there were not many responses to the call of attendees for the AGM two weeks from now. From the Meta page (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_South_Africa/AGM1) only the following people showed interest in attending:
* Douglas Scott
* Dumisani Ndubane
* Isla Haddow-Flood
* Lourie Pieterse
* Maarten Deneckere
* Mohau Monaledi
Just a reminder that we plan to have the agenda finalized by next week Saturday (25 August), so please try to give some input if you want to. I started to look at methods that can be used for voting by those who cannot attend the meeting. I see that some of the other chapters use a dedicated vote system, which normally works together with the membership database. Currently we do not have such a system in place, so we cannot use this method. I am not sure how such voting is done normally, but I propose that members can email their votes to a dedicated email address (vote(a)wikimedia.org.za) which will then be forwarded to the board list. That way members can cast votes without other members knowing them, but yet casting them to a well maintained database. These lists are well archived, so this means we can easily keep track of what is happening.
This is just a suggestion, so please drop me a line and let me know what you think. Another thing before I forget, it is also possible to get someone else to be your proxy at the meeting. If anyone is interested in this option, please let me know so that we can get the paperwork in order. It is required to give written permission to your person of choice to represent you.
Thank you very much for this enquiry. We would be delighted to have you on board. We are working on formalising membership structures, thus for now there is a free subscribing policy. I support your membership.
We are in need of volunteers for the provincial marathons for the month of September. Would you be willing to assist in arranging the KZN upload marathon? We will need a Zulu speaker.

Hello Dumi and Mohau
Sorry that I am sending you this only now. As you might have seen, Blessing asked me yesterday what she should do regarding her flights for the launch. If you can buy the tickets yourself we will reimburse you afterwards, otherwise send me a quote of the flights, and I will transfer the amount to your account. I do not really know what to do regarding the accommodation and car rental, so I think it might be best if you could get quotes for that as well and then I can just transfer you the money? Or what do you think are the best option? If possible, it will be good if you two can only rent one car, as we only budgeted for two. Just let me know what suites you best.
Currently it seems like the meeting will be at 09:00 with the WLM launch at 16:00. I think that everything will be finished by around 17:00 or 18:00, maybe the rest of the team can give some input? That will give you a good time frame to fly in the morning and then leave the same evening. How does that sound? It will be best if you can arrange it yourself, because my time is limited. We will then reimburse you afterwards. Please do keep all receipts, as we must submit them to the Wikimedia Foundation. Thanks.

>Firstly thank you for your coordination and commitment. I was waiting to confirm my plans and I am available to attend the meeting. Would it be ok if I came in on the morning and if the meeting is not finishing late, then I can come back to Gauteng the same evening. If not I could do a night in CT. May you also let me know if I should arrange my travel and then you will reimburse or if you will arrange directly. I will have very limited to no Internet from this Saturday until the 27th August and need to confirm before I go.

>I created a page on Meta (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_South_Africa/AGM1) that lists the potential attendees. We can now also start to brainstorm about exactly what we want to discuss at this meeting. Later today I will add a temporary agenda which we can then edit into the correct format. Please keep in mind, so far Dumisani and Mohau is the only members from Gauteng interested in attending. The WLM budget allows all the project organizers and WMZA board members to attend the event. Due to all the arrangements we still need to make, it will be best to set a deadline for this Saturday (18 August) to know exactly who is going to attend this meeting. That will be a week after the initial call, so please do respond before then so that we know what is going for what and can finalize arrangements. Thank you.
>We should also set a deadline for the finalized agenda, because then the members that are not able to attend the meeting are able to cast votes using an electronic system. I propose that we set the agenda deadline for next Saturday (25 August), which will give those members another week to cast votes until the meeting itself. Feel free to propose other dates if you think necessary. Sometime this week I will start to work on such a system.

All I have to say is that I am acting in the interest of the chapter members. None of them complained so far about anything what I did, and should someone have a problem with what I am doing, I am always open to listening and improving the way I am doing things. All my actions are within the by-laws of the chapter. I have no problem with speaking to you on Saturday and having a constructive conversation, but if you plan to insult me again as previously, I am not interested.

I am traveling and will be back in Jo'burg on the weekend and will find the email where the board agreed on the timeline for the AGM which I had also stated in the meeting grant application. We budgeted for all of the board members to be at the launch, which is in Cape Town, so it is the cheapest option available. :) I hope that we are going to see you there?

Our Faebook page is getting lonely and can really use all of your
support. Lets buld it audience. If you havent liked the page as yet
please see the following beolw:

Lets get 100 likes by the end of august. Once you have liked the page,
dont forget to invite all your FB friends to do the same. The more the
2) Launch event in two weeks time. We have setup a facebook event on
the following link:
Please follow link and click that you will attend if you can be in
cape town on the first of september. We need at least 30 wikimedians
who can be in Capetown on the day to come through. The wikipedia list
suggests that there are atleast 60 wikimedian living in and arround
Cape Town. Please let us know on the event above if you will attend so
that we can finalise our catering requirements.
The time has come to be the best we cn be, remember we are the only
African country participating in this international competition.
Africa will be judged by our own efforts!! lets not dissapoint.
(The little commander)
Now that we're incorporated, we need to grow our membership so as to
achieve critical mass.
According to the consititution, "Any person who makes a written
application to become a member of the company and whose application is
accepted by the directors shall be and become a member of the
Dumisani has expressed interest and been welcomed on the email lists,
but I'd like to get confirmation that he has been formally accepted as
a member. I support his membership.
Maarten has asked how he can become a member, which I take to be a
written request, and I also support his membership.
I am sure that if we ask Douglas whether he wants to be a member,
he'll join, and I'd like to ask pre-emptively whether anyone has an
objection to his membership.
I'd also like us to agree on a membership process. One reasonable way
to approach this would be to require a prospective member to contact a
board member or post directly to the WMZA list. A director can then
approve his or her membership tenatively with a posting to the board
list - with no objections within two weeks, or with all directors'
agreement, that director should then be allowed to approve the
membership request formally. Please give me your feedback on this
In terms of getting new members, we urgently need to get more
Wikimedia project people into the organisation. We can do this by
advertising on the wikis.
Wikiproject South Africa:
Wikiproject South Africa is quite active, and I think we should all
join it, and announce any meetups on the project page.
We should try to get banners on South African language Wikis ASAP:
The only really active one is Afrikaans: http://af.wikipedia.org . We
have none of the more active af-wiki editors in our membership, which
is a shame. I'm sure we can fix this soon by simply approaching them
and letting them know who we are and what we're doing.
Registered but less active:
http://nso.wikipedia.org - Sepedi Wikipedia has 568 pages, but not
very many active editors. I see Mohau has been editing a bit there.
http://zu.wikipedia.org - isiZulu Wikipedia has 543 pages, and a
relatively similar state to Sepedi.
http://tn.wikipedia.org - Setswana Wikipedia has 491 pages, but not
very much seems to be going on there since the Google challenge
http://ss.wikipedia.org - siSwati Wikipedia has 361 pages, slightly
less active than Sepedi and isiZulu
http://ts.wikipedia.org - Xitsonga Wikipedia only has 193 pages, but
seems to have more activity recently, and has a nicer-looking front
page than many similar-sized minor language Wikipedias. I see
Dumisani (Thuvack) has been active there, maybe he can help connect
with the community.
http://ve.wikipedia.org - tshiVenda Wikipedia has 190 pages, but
doesn't seem active at all at the moment.
http://st.wikipedia.org - Sesotho Wikipedia has 145 pages, but doesn't
seem very active.
http://xh.wikipedia.org - isiXhosa Wikipedia has 136 pages, but is not
If we can manage to connect to active users in these Wikipedias, we
might be able to get them to write a note on the front page asking
users to connect with us, to build community connections.
http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/nr/Main_Page - Southern Ndebele
has one article, about the National Language Service, so I doubt
there's a community to work with.
I think we should also ask for a geolocated banner ad: this way anyone
who uses Wikipedia in South Africa can be alerted to our existence,
and hopefully we'll get some traction.
