[A2K]: The Access to Knowledge - Bulletin - January '13

Dear all, Wikimedia Foundation, beginning from September 1, 2012, awarded the Centre for Internet & Society (CIS) a two-year grant of INR 26,000,000 to support and develop free knowledge in India. Consequently, Wikimedia Foundation's India Program became the Access to Knowledge (A2K) program [1] of CIS. In the first issue of our newsletter for 2013, we are glad to introduce you to our new programme director, Vishnu Vardhan, provide you an update of the Access to Knowledge (September to December 2012) Report, the Indic Languages Wikipedia Statistical Report 2012 and reports of the events organised in Goa in the month of December 2012. Vishnu Vardhan [5], Nitika Tandon [6], Subhashish Panigrahi [7] and Noopur Raval [8]. # New Project Director for Wikipedia Project * T. Vishnu Vardhan [9] is the new Programme Director-Access to Knowledge at CIS. Vishnu has over the last 11 years worked in various capacities as researcher, grant manager, teacher, project consultant, information architect and translator. Vishnu managed the Art, Crafts and Culture [10] portfolio of Sir Ratan Tata Trust [11] and also worked as Research Coordinator at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society [12] in Bangalore. # Distinguished Fellow * Tejaswini Niranjana [13], a Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society (CSCS), Bangalore, and Visiting Professor at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai is joining our team as an Adviser to the 'Access to Knowledge' programme. She will guide the A2K team in expanding the Indian language Wikipedias and in increasing the number of active editors through strategic partnerships with Higher Education institutions across India. # Events Organised by CIS: Note: The events in Goa were organized in the month of December 2012. As an independent, non-profit research organisation, it runs different policy research programmes such as Accessibility, Access to Knowledge, Openness, Internet Governance, and Telecom. The policy research programmes have resulted in outputs such as the e-Accessibility Policy Handbook for Persons with Disabilities [26] with ITU and G3ict, and Digital Alternatives with a Cause? [27], Thinkathon Position Papers [28] and the Digital Natives with a Cause? *Wikimedia India activity report: October 2012 to December 2012*Admin & LegalTraining and induction of new EC After the elections in September, a common meeting of the outgoing and incoming Executive Council members was conducted. This had outdoor group activities, induction training and also interaction with our consultant. New office bearers were decided and roles and responsibilities of the new EC members were defined. Our Executive Manager was also present and participated in the activities. Capacity *Membership:* Membership as of December 31, 2012 is 185. *Donations:* Amount of donations received during Oct-Dec 2012 was Nil. *Appointments:* Abhijit Jayanti was appointed as Hyderabad SIG chair. Bangalore meetup #50 was organised at TERI. The keynote speaker was WMF board member Bishakha Datta. It was a milestone event for the Bangalore Wikimedia community. City SIG chair Radhakrishna and other wikipedians were involved in its organisation. 2. A Wiki Academy was organised in IIT Chennai on October 6, 2012. Speakers/Facilitators were Arjuna Rao Chavala and T. Sujatha (Telugu Wikipedian). Executive Manager of WMIN Sowmyan Trimurthi also attended. November 1. The Wikipedia Workshop for Women took place on November 4, 2012 in Vidyalankar Institute of Technology (VIT), Wadala. More than 70 female participants attended the workshop. The people who volunteered in organizing this workshop were Bishakha Datta, Moksh Juneja, Karthik Nadar, Pranav Curumsey, Pradeep Mohandas, Anshuman Fotedar, Aditi Juneja, Harriet Vidyasagar, Nikita Belavate, Netra Parikh, Noopur Raval, Netha Hussain, Rohini Lakshane. GLAM Event at Bangalore - along with Creative Commons

On 25th of Feb 2013, we will have the Bangalore event where Creative Commons team will be talking about their CC program. The event is tentatively scheduled to start at 2 pm. We will have a GLAM event associated with this. Omshivaprakash, Kannada SIG Chair, and ArunRam will be coordinating this. Other interested volunteers can join. College of Fine Arts associated with the Chitra Kala Parsishad is the partner co-hosting the event. The venue will be the basement hall at Chitra Kala Parishad. We welcome suggestions related to this event from chapter members and the India community of Wikipedians. Pls mark this day in your calender. We have limited seats (80). So I would like members to send me a note if they intend to attend. This will help in anticipating the number of people expected to come, and plan accordingly. Dear Srikanth, *When I mentioned it is easy to become a member, I meant for Indian > citizens.* > 100 Rupee is membership fee and whether its small amount or large amount is different point of view. Why there is 18 age limit to become member of Wikimedia India Chapter?
