Subject: [Wikimedia-asia-chapters] Movement Roles
To: Asian Wikimedia Chapters coordination <
wikimedia-asia-chapters(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
Movement roles project is a WMF project to clarify the roles and
responsibilities of different
entities, groups, and people working to support the international Wikimedia
movement.
For Asian Wikimedians, it is a great chance for us to share our opinions and
views.
That's why i would like to invite you to participate in the movement roles
project.
If you are Wikimedian who already have some knowledge of how the movement is
working,
you can answer the* Initial Questions*:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_roles_project/Initial_Questions
If you are representing your chapter or you are in relevant groups or
cooperative efforts,
you can answer the *Fact Base*:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_roles_project/Movement_fact_base
For Fact Base, the pages for existed chapters and some known relevant
groups and
cooperative efforts are already reserved. You can just edit the page that
you are in.
In fact, you can just finish a part of the questions that you are interested
instead of finishing
the whole set. At least i know somebody did the same thing. But of
course,*it must be the
*
*best if you can finish the whole set, then we can get a complete idea from
you or your*
*chapters.*
*The deadline is in Mid-January 2011. *We will collect and analyse all the
data before
the meeting on 28/29 January 2011.
I am in the working group of this project, so if you have any questions or
difficulties when
you are participating, you can contact me.
Thank you very much. I hope i can see your answers on Initial Questions and
you chapter's
information on the face base! :-)

Cheers,
Morgan

Hi all,
I suppose Wikipedia stall at FOSS.IN was a great start in reaching out to
FOSS / Student community in India. We must attempt to be present in a
stall at all such similar events which give space for us. I have got a
confirmation from Carte Blanche[1] for a stall and working with Wikipedians
in Chennai for manning the stall on Feb 6. There is also a fossmeet at NIT
Calicut[2] happening around the same time. Any Kerala / Malayalam
wikipedians willing to take it up? We must also keep a watch on huge
technical events at prominent colleges where we would be getting students
from the particular region and having a stall there would give a reach to
about 500-1000 Students(and/or general public).

Hi all,
It was quite overwhelming to see loads of people joining in for the Kannada
Wikipedia meet-up beyond the expected numbers!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hpnadig/5290761488/
It was thought that less people would turn up given the difficulty getting
to the venue and more importantly the holiday season. But it turned out to
be a great day discussing Kannada Wikipedia and having some fun as well.
Most of the audience felt that everyone should do a bit more to improve
Kannada version, and the difficulty mainly was in the 'input method' for
Kannada and fonts.
There was this active set of several Wikimedians from Kannada wiktionary
(which has of late been faring quite well). Few people using Google
translator toolkit to add articles to Kannada Wikipedia were also present
from the host, inetFrame solutions. There was an interaction between
community members and this team on the translation process. Several doubts
were resolved and few issues were sorted out. It was decided that a
feedback/guidelines page would be put up on the Wiki for everyone using
Google translator toolkit or the Microsoft Bhasha tool including those that
were discussed today.
There was discussion about bringing back the weekly collaborations that were
happening once upon a time. Community members were also keen to know more
about using the Google kit to translate lengthy articles.
It was great fun discussing about translations and sharing some experiences
on Wikipedia. Several people added in their thoughts about translations and
about improving the overall quality of articles.
It was decided that work should be started on putting up videos to help
normal (non-techie) users edit Wikipedia. *[In fact, it would be a good idea
to start this for most of the Indian language Wikipedias - drop me an email
if any of you are interested in participating]
Some of them (especially some contributors who have been on and off on the
wiki due to several roadblocks they faced while editing) were keen to know
whether a PDF with hands-on FAQ (an e-book) could be readied in Kannada that
would help them figure out how to overcome the issues they face without
having to contact sysops or active editors who already have their hands
full. *[Any volunteers for this one? Again, we could do the same for all
Indian languages. Sharing what we've learned all these days editing
Wikipedia should be fun. Please enlist by dropping an email off the list.]
The participants were keen to have regular meet-ups of the kind that would
allow more interactions off-line to clear the doubts, help each other
clearing roadblocks in contributing.

Thanks to the inetFrame solutions who allowed us to use the venue for free
and for the tea.

Greetings, Wikipedians!
I am interested in supporting and helping organize a WikiX celebration
in New Delhi on 14 January 2010. I would really appreciate to know if
there are other volunteers available in New Delhi who can help make
this a reality. Any kind of support would be appreciated. Thanks.
Yours sincerely,

Good news, people. We've added Kannada in-built typing tool for Kannada
Wikipedia as well now. Thanks to Junaid's work - we've used his script to
achieve this. Thanks to Harisha M G for helping modify the mapping for
Kannada.
The transliteration is working great - I just added it and tested it quite
extensively and it is working fine. Please write to the Kannada Wikipedia
mailing list if you have any feedback or face any issues while using this.
Cheers,

Dear All,
As all of you know, the first edition of the *Wikimedia India Community
Newsletter*<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_India_Community_Newsletter…>was
released by Barry Newstead on 2010 September.
The wikimedians associated with the Newsletter know that much effort had
put behind to bring out the first edition. We all are happy to see that the
newsletter is well received by Wikimedians across the world. There were many
obstacles faced while we were working on the first edition. But the
community was able to overcome all these and bring out the first edition.
There are many lessons learned during this process.
Now almost 3 months had passed after we released the first edition. It is
important that this initiative needs to be carried forward. In the past 2
months many people have asked me about the second edition of the Newsletter.
Even though I voluntarily coordinated the various activities for the first
edition, I am no longer in a position to continue that for the future
editions. It is better to *form a team* *of active Indian Wikimedians* to
coordinate the various activities of the Wikimedia India Newsletter.
I request the help and support from different Indian language wiki
communities to take this initiative forward. The idea is to* form a team
with 2 or 3 active users from each language community* and coordinate the
activities for the Wikimedia India Newletter. *Srikanth Lakshmanan* has
informed me that he will help me to form the initial setup. Once the initial
setup is formed the complete responsibility of the Newsletter rest with this
Newsletter team.
*Eligibility:* The only criteria that needs to be fulfilled to be part of
this initiative is, * the person must be an active wikimedian* in any of the
Indian language wiki community. The person needs to be part of the language
community and should be able to coordinate with the respective language
community to prepare content for the Newsletter. The respective language
community can decide which active users can be part of the Newsletter team.
Please send a mail to me (shijualexonline(a)gmail.com) and Srikanth (
srik.lak(a)gmail.com) so that we can take this forward.
Thanks
Shiju Alex
Hi all, We have all witnessed a lot of community activity in the recent months.
Be it outreach activities like meetups, bringing out offline editions,
conducting contests, writing bots, creating strategies, and what not, there is
currently no single place to find them all. Let's put the wikimedia.in chapter
wiki to good use for this purpose. Please add past, current, and proposed
projects to the http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Wikimedia_India_project_directory
Listing the projects there would also help in finding interested volunteers.
If you want to volunteer for Wikimedia India activities, please add yourself to
http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Wikimedia_India_contributors so that other contributors
can find you.
Of course, as with everything wiki, feel free to improve the layout of the
listings. :)
