Hi folks,
Unfortunately my flight out of Bangalore leaves at 520 on Saturday, so I am
planning to leave the city around 230. The meetup on Saturday is currently
scheduled for 3PM. I'd hate to miss all of it, so I hope some folks can make
it early. I will plan to be there at 130 or so.
This only affects me. Danese and Alolita will leave the next day.
Hope to see you there,
Erik
Did any one notice in Pune Meetup "Class"room Photographs Front benchers
were probably were well prepared with their jackets and all accessories, may be
they knew in advance "Class"room is going to be too cold without accessories,
See folded hand body language of some of back benchers seems not adequately
prepared for Pune Winter

If someone from SICSR is on the list they may be able to put a much
definitive answer.
My guess is that arranging for the auditorium or, even an informal
gathering place at a reasonably quick notice is difficult to do. There
aren't many places at Pune where you can get together, sit around and
then break off into smaller circles of discussion. Especially at that
hour of the day.
That said, the "classroom" did encourage the students (the newbie
contributors) to speak up in familiar surroundings. So, it actually
worked out fairly well although Erik and Danese ended up doing a bit
of back and forth on moderating and queue-ing up the questions.

That was meant to be humorous but I guess no one got the point :).
Nothing serious.

Thanks Tinu, Sankarshan, for images of Pune Meetup 3.
For those who attended, could we have a small brief (or even better a
blog post) about what transpired for those who missed the meet?
As of now, this is a problem. Meets dont get reported. People forget
that the written report of what transpired is absolutely necessary for
the community. A few uncaptioned photos or newspaper clippings are of
no use.
This is contrary to the Wikipedia spirit of free flow of information.
Inadequate reporting of a Wikipedia meetup is a contradiction of
sorts.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

Dear All:
There has been some public confusion as to the nature and status of Mr.
Kiruba Shankar's involvement with the Wikimedia India Chapter. This notice
seeks to clarify that:
- Mr. Kiruba Shankar was initially associated with efforts to set up a
Wikimedia India Chapter.
- He has publicly acknowledged that he is no longer involved with this
Chapter via an email on the 12th of March 2010 because, in Mr. Shankar's
words:
“*There are times I overran myself in the assumption that Foundation
formation time could happen sooner and assumed I'd be part of the board and
hence a Director (designate) without realizing the really long gestation
period it takes to set up the foudation *[sic]* or the confusion it would
cause.*” [1]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-March/000476.html>
- However, this confusion has persisted and Mr. Shankar has, in the
recent past, clarified that he is in no way associated with the Wikimedia
India Chapter.[2]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-October/001059.h…>
[3]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-October/001061.h…>
- Sadly, it has come to our attention that he continues to make make
unwarranted and patently false representations as to the nature of his
association with the Wikimedia India Chapter. The most recent example being
his visiting card that states that he is a Director of Wikimedia India,
[4]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/attachments/20101210/…>when
in fact no such position exists within the framework provided by the
Memorandum of Association of the Wikimedia India
Chapter.[5]<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_India/MoA-ChapComVer>
- When this was brought to his
attention,[6]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-December/001402.…>Mr.
Shankar responded to note that “
*I ran out of my present bunch of cards and since I had to travel to
Lavasa for the INK conference, I had to pick my old bunch of unused cards
because my new cards got delayed from the printers. I had consciously been
striking out the position clearly on each of the cards ( attached are two
photos of the entire bunch and a closeup of one such card) . I'm sorry that
the card that your friend got missed out. If in doubt, you can check out
with others (though your friend) that I consciously stuck it
out.*”[7]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/attachments/20101210/…>
[8]<http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/attachments/20101210/…>
Given the continued nature of the confusion and misrepresentation, we have
been forced to issue Mr. Shankar notice to cease and desist from such
activity.[9]<http://wikimedia.in/wiki/Public_Notice_regarding_Kiruba_Shankar%27s_Involve…>
These notices have both been posted here:

Hi all,
Wow! It was a hell of a day seeing and meeting people at Redhat's
office for wikipedia stuff.
Quite a bit to share but need couple of things. Fortunately or
unfortunately didn't have a camera so need photos to spice the post
up, a hashtag if there is already one or something please lemme know.
Whenever there are photos in the public domain of today's meet, one
can expect a post in few hours (barring sleep hours, of course) .
Unfortunately, unlike wikimedia not awake round-the-clock (citation :-
http://www.mid-day.com/news/2010/dec/131210-Erik-Moller-Wikipedia-Pune.htm)
:)
I may also do couple of follow-ups as there were lots of things
swirling in my head but there were neither the time or the space to do
it.
Frankly, came to know for the first time there are other Idiots (pun
on 3 Idiots please) like me who enjoy making a difference.
So wiki on :)

hi,
The central Wikipedia Ten page has rolled out phase of its communication
toolkit. It has a wider 10-year what we've accomplished scenario.
Any idea on who was the first Wikipedian from India? Any way to find out??
warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

Subject: [WikiX-l] W10: Communications Toolkit Phase I
To: Planning for WP 10th anniversary <wikix-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello, everyone:
Following up on the email we sent out last week, we have Phase I of the
Community Communications Toolkit up:
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_Communications_Kit
Phase I stresses two things for volunteers: telling your own story NOW and
helping to pull together background information on the history of Wikipedia
and the global magnitude of our work.
As discussed in the last email, we understand that most people don’t fully
realize we’re a mission-driven, non-profit movement run by real, everyday
people who care about providing a free public service to the world. Often,
Wikipedia is thought to be a static product or service, not a living,
breathing community of people who care. While some of us in the Wikimedia
community are dedicated to communications work, all of us can use this
10-year anniversary as an opportunity to educate the world about who we are,
the work that we do and the mission that drives us. The first—and most
important—thing we can do RIGHT NOW is tell our own stories in our own words
and encourage others who care about our work to do the same. Over the past
10 years, what has Wikipedia come to mean to the world? What was it like
before there was a Wikipedia in your language? How will it impact the next
ten years? We're encouraging all volunteers and anyone who cares about our
projects to publicly tell their personal Wikipedia stories via letters to
the editor, op-eds and personal or chapter blog posts. If volunteers don't
have a blog or aren't comfortable sharing thoughts publicly, we've created a
page to post on wiki as well: http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Stories
Additionally, we need help curating all of the interesting information about
Wikipedia including:
*Wikipedia's Historical Timeline:
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_timeline
*Stats and information to help demonstrate the magnitude of Wikipedia:
http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_by_the_numbers<http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Share>
*Wikipedia's top 10s: http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia%27s_Top_Ten
There's a wealth of interesting information out there, but hasn't been
captured and organized so that we can all access it easily. If you remember
any fun facts and Wikipedia trivia from the last ten years, please share!
We plan to send a variation of this email to Internal and Foundation. We'll
likely post Phase II of the Toolkit on Friday which should also include a
draft media advisory we plan to send to press next Tuesday. Until then,
please provide any feedback you have.
Cheers,
Moka
