I'm trying to login as the following user and passwd that are set in the LocalSettings.php file and can't. It complains that the password is incorrect but I'm using the one spelled out in the LocalSettings.php file.
I'm also authenticating the user logins to a local LDAP server but I thought i had logged in as the admin user before using LDAP.
Any hints?
thanks
$wgDBuser $wgDBpassword

Not the same account. The credentials specified in LocalSettings.php are used when connecting to the database. You need to log in with the administrator username and password provided during installation.
If you've forgotten the username, you may be able to recover it from Special:Listusers. If you've lost the password, Google for "MediaWiki password hash" and see what turns up in the way of help on resetting it. There's also a maintenance script to reset passwords, IIRC.

Also, if you now have the LDAP plugin enabled, you either need to disable it until you promote a user who is in LDAP, or turn on $wgLDAPUseLocal until you do so.

If it's not one of the email notification preferences shown (there are four), then it's probably been switched off in the site configuration - $wgEnotifWatchlist is the option in question.
