Yes, it's a non-intuitive design. One has to guess at what was
intended, and hope for the best. Surely, the two functions could have
been implemented on two pages.
Registration is not identical with login. In some cases, you might
want the ability to approve or deny registrations.

Yes, is looks very confusing at first sight! maybe we could have the
classic way : a userlogin page, with [[Sign in]] and [[Lost password]]
links to specialpages dedicated to registration and passwd recovery?
