Dear all,
There is a problem when I try to configure the mediawiki on Ubuntu 10.04.

When I try to use <ref>...</ref> and <references/> to show the references...
it doesn't work (the code is shown instead the references)...
What am I doing wrong?
I have used <ref> tags in other wikis and it works whit no problems.

"If there is a shell, there is a way"
Hi all,
I desperately need MultiFileUpload to work. I've got a fresh out of
the box mediawiki-1.16.0 installation at
http://www.parts-unknown.org/mediawiki/ . When I enable the
extension, which I got from the mediawiki site (svn...), and click
on the link to get to it, I get
Fatal error: Call to undefined method UploadForm::uploadform() in
/var/lib/mediawiki-1.16.0/extensions/MultiUpload/MultiUpload.body.php
on line 68
I'm sorry but I just haven't any idea what that means. And if
Google is to be believed, no one else in the whole wide world has
ever encountered this problem. I could really use a hand.
Thanks!

I've just upgraded to 1.16.0 and am using the new vector skin.
How can I get the animated sidebar items, as are on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/ ? Is it an extension, config, skin edit, or what?

I've previously posted this question on the forum but haven't managed to
solve it yet, so I'm trying again here.
I'm trying to move a wiki from an old Suse machine to a new Ubuntu one.
The old machine is running:
suse 9.3
mediawiki 1.4rc1-4.17i586
mysql 4.1.10a-3.8i586
php4 4.3.10-14.35i586
apache2 2.0.53-9.15i586
The new one is running:
ubuntu 10.4 lucid
mediawiki 1:1.15.1-1ubuntu2.1
mysql 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6
php5 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.5
apache2 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.2
I installed the mediawiki package and it ran OK.
I've copied the images and AdminSettings.php across and tweaked the
LocalSettings.php. I've migrated the database and can happily browse it
using mysql tools.
I'm trying to run 'php update.php' but get an error. The output from it
is as follows:
# php update.php

I did run into one problem I couldn't fix yet, though. The Semantic Maps
extension had to be removed because it couldn't find a table
And I don't know where or how that table is created. There doesn't seem to
be any code that would create the coord_sm table and there is no
Sql file that I've seen. Anyone know about this?

problem
Hello all,
...
Shana, if you or someone writes a "dummies" book on the semantic mediawiki,
I'll definitely buy a copy.
There are books on the semantic web but there aren't enough that are
specific to an application. For example, there is no book on mediawiki and
the semantic web technologies. there are books on Drupal which is
Using the semantic web technologies but none on drupal and the semantic web.
I did see a "dummies" book on " The Semantic Web" and did read it. It did
both give a preview of what was coming and say that the semantic web exists
already but without getting specific enough.
One book I got on Programming the Semantic Web failed to say that it used
python, a language I never used, and didn't realize that knowledge of python
would be essential to get anywhere with the book, past chapter 1.
I did find python interesting though J.
So, I've done a great deal of reading but a terribly limited amount of
practical work with the semantic web. I haven't yet picked up a book or
complete course that said "this is what the semantic web is all about and
here is how we will specifically use it in application x." Where
application x could be mediawiki or a different cms or something.
That's what is unfortunately lacking in my explorations.
And how are all these people creating foaf files with so little out there in
terms of tools for doing that?
If there was a mediawiki extension for creating foaf files that would be
awesome! And/or other related files, sioc, skos, etc.

Subject: Re: [Semediawiki-user] Semantic Mediawiki Beginners
Hey Bruce,
I've found it kind of hard myself to find really basic information. But
between having a background (somewhat, not great) in programming, and being
an information professional (cool name for librarian), AND the help from
Yaron and others on this list I've been able to get some amazing and
powerful things done with SMW, semantic forms, etc.
It was good advice from Yury to install semantic bundle instead of just SMW.
Lots of great extensions are included and the install will take care of all
of it for you (except that include needed in the LocalSettings.php). He also
provided good links that I've pored over personally, but to be honest those
are still not going to help the beginner faced with all this new stuff at
once.
If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask, just don't think you will get
the blow by blow "Here's the code to do what you want". Unless I know the
answer to the question--then you will get the blow by blow including why it
works because I've been writing tech documentation "for dummies" for over a
decade now :)
If you have basic questions right now, why don't you reply to this thread
and I'll see if I (or someone else, if they want!) can answer them.
The most important thing to start out with is to be able to answer the
question "What am I trying to do?". If you don't have a clear vision for
what you want your wiki to do -- and I mean fundamental stuff like "I want
each page to look like Wikipedia with that box on the side" or "I want an
event calendar", you are going to feel overwhelmed from the start. It is
best to work on one feature at a time unless a feature is interconnected
with another one.

I am using MediaWiki 1.12 installed on Linux machine.
We have been using MediaWiki for over a year with the file upload variables
set to their default values. Here is what the current mediawiki image
folder looks like:
wikiserver:~# ls /var/www/wiki/images
0 2 4 6 8 a b d e gnuplot thumb
1 3 5 7 9 archive c deleted f temp
Now we need to change upload directory path to something more generic like
"uploads" with the hash strcture instead of "images" directory.
I created the "uploads" directory and set the proper permission to it:
wikiserver:~# ls -l /var/www/wiki/

Now I am thinking to have the following in my LocalSettings.php file:
$wgUploadPath = "{$wgScriptPath}/uploads";
$wgUploadDirectory = "{$IP}/uploads/";
$wgHashedUploadDirectory = false;
So far everything looks good and the new files uploaded will work just fine.
Now my question (s):
What about the links/path to the files that have been upload previously? I
am guessing that those will break since they reside in
/var/lib/mediawiki/images directory. Do I need to move them to the new
upload directory /var/lib/mediawiki/uploads ? What about the existing
articles that link to those files in the images directory? Is there a script
which will do the automated image link building?
Thanks
I have a mostly working mediawiki
== MediaWiki 1.16.0 ==
2010-07-28
I have in my LocalSettings.php
...
$wgEnableUploads = true;
$wgUploadSizeWarning = 1024*1024;
$wgMaxUploadSize = 512*1024*1024;
$wgFileExtensions = array( 'png', 'fig', 'gif', 'tif', 'tiff', 'm',
'c', 'h', 'cpp', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'doc', 'xls', 'tex', 'pdf', 'dat',
'txt', 'ppt', '3gp', 'wmf' );

$wgUploadPath = "images";
$wgUploadDirectory = "images";
$wgMathPath = "{$wgUploadPath}/math";
$wgMathDirectory = "{$wgUploadDirectory}/math";
$wgTmpDirectory = "{$wgUploadDirectory}/tmp";
I can upload files, but I don't see them rendered when I refresh the
corresponding page (although the image file link text has changed
color). The browser seems to momentarily be drawing the outline box
for the image.
Also my formulas using LaTeX are working partially, <math>x</math>
renders, but <math>\hat{x}</math> does not. These may be related
symptoms of the same problem.
