i'm confused by the 'post a comment' inputbox. what should i put in the edit box? the title of the page to post a comment to? Can i have an easy 'comment on this page' link at the bottom of each page? What extensions do you know that tackle this issue? i saw LiquidThreads. is there something stable? Is there an extension that integrates javascript, so the user can marks a text in the page and comment about it? this is useful for users to post corrections to pages. External authentication and RSS.

Hi, New list member here. Been using MediaWiki for a while now. If this isn't the list to ask this would someone please direct me to the proper list? Thank you. First, is there any way to use an external user authentication system in MediaWiki. In our case the linux authentication controled by /etc/nsswitch.conf. Second, is there any way to have an RSS feed either in to or out of MediaWiki? I'm thinking of watchlist info for example out going or a CNN feed incoming? Extensions that require iconv

All, I am running into an issue with extension for MediaWiki that require the use of "iconv". My grasp of php is poor to say the least, though I am working on it. Can someone let me know how to actually install it so that MediaWiki extensions can then use it? I've got the "libiconv " files downloaded, but need to know how to proceed. calendaring and scheduling with MediaWiki

Hello, While searching for a "killer app" for convincing my colleagues of the advantages of a wiki (see the thread on corporate wiki success factors), I realized that calendaring and scheduling might be a very good thing to start with. This way everyone could, for example, enter their periods of absence (e.g. vacations, out-of-office meetings etc.) in the wiki without the hassle we currently have with these issues (we're mostly using an Excel sheet for that at the moment). However, I wonder how best to present the respective data. Using the EasyTimeline extension probably wouldn't be a good thing for starters, as its use is a little more complicated than the basic wiki syntax. A huge table might do the job, but its "source code" (i.e. wiki syntax) would probably look like a huge mess to most of my colleagues. So that leaves me with an ordinary sequential list - maybe with years and months as (sub-)headings? The whole thing might look something like this: http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Simple_Timeline Hmm, come to think of it, a shared Excel table might actually be better then - also because it'd be easier to highlight weekends and holidays there!? Corporate Intranets: Our uses....

We have four MediaWikis installed/integrated with National Geographic's corporate intranet: 1) LIS Wiki: We are using our main wiki -- Libraries & Information Services Wiki -- is being used for multiple solutions: dictionary/encylopedia functions like acronym list and records classification descriptinos; team sites; project management/status reports; Libraries staffs' resumes; quick reference guides; educational content; and fun stuff like favorite books and movies. We are testing out for our research guides as well. 2) Women Explorers Wiki: A wiki of over 200 women explorers with bibliographic information for our internal researchers. 3) National Geographic Magazine Wiki: Project collaboration on special issues for an NGM team. 4) National Geographic Channel International Standards & Practices Wiki: A wiki being used in three ways -- to share production standards catalog to external producers/production groups; for international staff that need information about other offices; and for internal staff. I've integrated several extensions that people really like: RSS, Calendar, and Input Box. Currently using MediaWiki 1.8.2. I've also installed a wiki for my professional association that you could see but it's in the early stages (www.slakm.org). I gave numerous presentations last year: Special Libraries Association annual conference, University of Maryland and Catholic University library programs, DTIC @ Fort Belvoir (VA), World Bank, National Gallery of Art, etc. This year, I'm already lined up to speak at the following places/venues: International Monetary Fund (February), National Institutes of Health for a Wiki Fair, Computers in Libraries (March), Catholic University (for a Library Technology class), Public Library in Arlington (VA), Special Libraries Association annual conference (teaching a class on wikis as well as speaking about building communities which will include wikis), etc. Hope this helps. Article Ratings System

Hi, I found this really nice MediaWiki ratings system extension, but I can't get it working on 1.8.2. Need Idea to replace "_" in Username/Script or anything else?

Hi, im sorry that i wrote again with this problem. I became this on my last request. ------------ MediaWiki does not support underscores in usernames. ------------ OK, but we need it because its an internal Userdb and with Version 1.5.8. MW works. Now i have an idea, but i dont no how to do it....is it possible. We have a POP-tunnel to an authentication server. ------------------------------ function authenticate( $username, $password ) { return imap_open("{10.131.XX.XX/POP3:110}", $username, $password ); } ----------------------------------------------------------------- Is it possible to (like a smal shell-script) replace $username temp. in the MyAuth.php? We redirect in LocalSettings.php ------------- require_once( 'extensions/MyAuthPlugin.php' ); ------------- The internal UserDB reaches ~3000 User, but i guess we are only 20 people that use wiki....but we cant setup new usernames. Any ideas without the idea "Shut up" ;)

UserScore extension

I am looking for a way to list the top 5 most active users, it looks like the extension http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/SpecialUserScore should do this, so I added it but it isnt working as a template. When I visit the Special:UserScore page it works if I am logged in as ops but when I put {{Special:UserScore}} it doesn't display a list of the most active users? Instead a link to Special:UserScore is displayed. Also If I am not logged in as ops the Special:UserScore page gives me the following error: Permission error >From WikiDetails Jump to: navigation, search The action you have requested is limited to users in the group "Bureaucrats". Im sorry if this is a dumb question, but I cant figure out how to change the permissions or get the template working. Chris

Empty home page after installation

I just did a fresh installation, details below, and I'm getting a blank home page. If I view the source I see basic HTML header lines and an empty body. I looked in the archives and it seems like this might be a bug with 1.8.2, but I'd rather get some feedback before going to the hassle of downgrading. I moved LocalSettings.php as required. Win Server 2003, IIS6, PHP5, MySQL 4.1 The other installation details are (**** obscures some details for security): PHP 5.1.6 installed Found database drivers for: MySQL Warning: PHP's register_globals option is enabled. Disable it if you can. MediaWiki will work, but your server is more exposed to PHP-based security vulnerabilities. PHP server API is cgi-fcgi; using ugly URLs (index.php?title=Page_Title) Have XML / Latin1-UTF-8 conversion support. PHP is configured with no memory_limit. Have zlib support; enabling output compression. Couldn't find Turck MMCache, eAccelerator or APC. Object caching functions cannot be used. GNU diff3 not found. Found GD graphics library built-in, image thumbnailing will be enabled if you enable uploads. Installation directory: C:\Domains\**** Script URI path: Environment checked. You can install MediaWiki. Warning: $wgSecretKey key is insecure, generated with mt_rand(). Consider changing it manually. Generating configuration file... Database type: MySQL Loading class: DatabaseMysql Attempting to connect to database server as ****...success. [OT] Terminology: Wikis vs. WikiWikiWebs

Hey everyone, When talking to other people about wikis, it is often necessary to point out that Wikipedia is only one implementation, and not THE wiki. In that context, I've noticed that the terminology in terms of naming the basic concept seems to be confusing or inconsistent: In my understanding, the term "wiki" is just a shortening of (and thus a synonym for) "WikiWikiWebs" - meaning that, strictly speaking, "WikiWikiWeb" would be the generic term (or hypernym) for the whole slew of wikis and wiki projects/communities out there. However, many resources (including Wikipedia) seem to limit the term "WikiWikiWeb" to Ward Cunningham's original implementation (WardsWiki or the Portland Pattern Repository) - whereas I'd see that as one of many WikiWikiWebs (or wikis), even if it was the orginal one. Am I wrong in my understanding of this - or is there simply no clear consensus on that yet? Thanks, Frederik
