First page save on new session

I have several wikis running where I work. Most are on 1.5.8 I have created one new wiki on 1.6.2 and upgraded one from 1.5.8 to 1.6.2 and then 1.6.3 I have noticed that on the two wikis running 1.6.x when I make the first page edit and click "save" I get a blank white screen. If I click "back" in my browser and then click "preview" for the preview of the page edits and THEN click "save" the page saves. Once I have "saved" the first page edit all the rest of my "saves" until I close my browser work fine. In my 1.5.8 wikis if you click "save" for he first time it takes me to the preview were I can then save the changes. Any ideas what is going on here? How can I by-pass the "preview" altogether and just "save"? I was wondering, what's the best / easiest way to link to a wiki page from an image? Right now a picture links to the corresponding Image: page. I've seen some funky implementations, but is there a no-brainer way? Thanks! There are no differences at all, no. Some early versions of MySQL 4.0 didn't accept the 'ENGINE' parameter on CREATE TABLE statements. It's been changed back to 'TYPE' for improved compatibility. (Apparently it was changed to 'ENGINE' because some versions of the experimental MySQL 5.1 had removed the 'TYPE' keyword, a change which has since been reverted.) -- brion vibber (brion @ pobox.com)

MediaWiki as a media repository

One of our MediaWiki installs is for faculty to collaboratively build content, tagged with additional dublin-core (or whatever that IEEE metadata standard is, I forget which) metadata, gone through a bit of peer analysis and review, and be exported out to a more "public" web site. One of the things that those that are shepherding this use have been needing is to do media uploads (as opposed to just images) - so that they can collaboratively view/evaluate the media for future export. Mainly flash files and mpeg4 movies. Some of which could be 50-100MB, maybe even more. The total number of these flash/movie files will probably stay under a few hundred for the next year, year and a half. Because MediaWiki comes "out of the box" supporting only image extensions, and because the default upload file size on most PHP installations is so low, I've avoided letting them use Mediawiki for this. I did open up the extensions, but never really let files > 4MB be uploaded. In earlier 1.5.x MediaWiki releases, the Gallery of New Files would often blow up, as MediaWiki ran out of memory (I assume) trying render thumbnails for the PDF, flash, (and powerpoint sadly, but that's another story) files. That has abated, due to increases in PHP memory available to that mediawiki site, and maybe even fixed by later 1.5.x releases, I haven't gone through all the change notes. But, despite that, I need to do something quick, and we'ved managed to get older faculty, some of who can be pretty obstinate about learning new technologies, working in a wiki. They are beginning to understand the wiki way (even if they insist on subverting it a bit with this validation/peer review process before things are deemed "public"), use the history, use metadata, etc. I like the idea of opening up the limits a bit on the mediawiki install so they can upload their multi-tens-of-megabytes media, because we have the history, categories, other metadata right there in a somewhat familar interface. All this is a rambly introduction to a question of: Are others using MediaWiki as a media repository of sorts? What kinds of things do I need to watch out for? What are some of the best practices/settings/etc. for this? Keeping Subcategories out of Special:Categories?

While trying to go through the Categories documentation because one of our peers can't for the life of them understand categories and subcategories (which may be an issue far beyond help ;-) - I did notice something interesting about meta.wikimedia.org that I'd like to somehow duplicate, which may help (well probably not) some of the confusion of our peer. In meta.wikimedia.org: Demo_1 is a subcategory of Demo: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Demo_1 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Demo (and demo is a subcategory of English Documentation) English Documentation and Demo both show up in Special:Categories - but How is Demo_1 kept out of the list of categories? http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php? title=Special:Categories&limit=250&offset=0 Inquiring minds want to know. Cache question

I've added some dynamically generated content (taken from a cookie) to the Main Page of my wiki. In order to see this content i need to Shift-Refresh when loading the page. Is this definitely a browser caching issue or is there anything i could be doing to make sure that the main page is not cached and a fresh version is always delivered to the user?

interwiki table changes not seen

I changed a iw_url value in my maintenance/interwiki.sql as per http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Guide_for_system_administrators_for_set… and ran the SQL to update the table for our intranet MediaWiki, and verified the change with select * from interwiki; but my site is not picking up the changes. I edited an article that has an interwiki link in it for the iw_prefix that I changed but when I preview/save that article, the link still refers to the old (iw_url) value. If I add a new entry to the table, interwiki links using the new iw_prefix work and resolve to the iw_url of the new record. So I'm confident the table is being updated correctly. Is there some interwiki caching going on that masks changes to existing rows in the table? I'm using: * MediaWiki: 1.5.6 * PHP: 4.4.2 (apache) * MySQL: 4.1.7-standard-log thanks -- David J. 1.6.2 navigation sidebar

Hi again, I have set $wgUseDatabaseMessages = false; in my LocalSettings.php because I want to switch the languagecode from "de" to "en" some times. The Wiki switch the complete language correctly from german to english and back, excepting the navigation sitebar, and i find no way to edit it (the wiki is always useing the german language in the navigation sidebar). Changes in the messages.php have no effect (I also can't add a navigation link). The only Way I have found is delete $wgUseDatabaseMessages = false in the LocalSettings.php and use MediaWiki:Sidebar to edit it. Is there no way to edit the Sidebar with $wgUseDatabaseMessages = false??? Why does have changes in Messages.php no effect? Why does all the other Text switch from german to english excepting the navigation sidebar? I have a fresh-installed 1.6.2 Wiki and have done the setup with the german language... Then I logged in as an user and switch the language in preferences from german to english it will work all correctly.

Oracle Support

Hi, Are there any official roadmaps or statements out there when a full Oracle support might be available? Or at least a explanation what experimental means - funtionally complete but not tested thoroughly? I'm asking because our company is already running a number of applications on Oracle, so this would spare me from thinking about disaster recovery, backup, ... for the Wiki - the Oracle servers are already covered. German Translation 1.6.X

Hello, sorry for this posting, but i found some mistakes or missing words, in the german translation for Mediawiki 1.6.X, and i am not sure would i should do now, post this issues in the bugtracker or simply wait for the next version ? I found no informations about the translations in the mediawiki or the metawiki, and i am not sure about the bugtracker because i found no other entries in the bugtracker.
