Hi,
I'm currently trying to organize a common wiki for multiple departments
with the following requirements:
1. Parts of the wiki should be restricted to different user groups
(departments), so that only these users can edit or read them.
2. maybe some single pages sould be restricted so that only a few users
can read them
3. There should be a common area all authenticated users can access
(read/write)
Now I've come to two possible solutions (A and B) how to solve this:
A.)
1.) I can use some custom Namespaces and restrict those Namesapaces to
predefined user groups.
Described here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Preventing_Access#Setting_permissions_for_a_…
The caveat is that if I place these articles into categories the
category page always shows the article (alphabetically ordered) under
"Z" (if the namespace starts with Z).
Furthermore even though I've access to the Namespace (and article) the
Article is not found in a search?
$wgNamespacesToBeSearchedDefault is set correctly
It only seems that the article is found as soon as i put a link into it.
Is this normal?
2.) I could use the PageProtection extension:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/PageProtection
3.) this would be all pages in the Default Namespace "Main"
B.)
1.) I create a wiki family with one wiki for each department and use
interwiki linking. For each wiki I would use a group configuration that
allows/disallows edit/access.
What I haven't found out so far is:
- is it possible to search across a wiki family? (e.g. if someone enters
a query in the department wiki, would he get results from the other
departments?)
- how can a single sign on be realized, so that users that sign on to
one department don't need to authenticate in another one again? Can a
common wiki user/groups database be used?
2.) same as in solution A.
3.) This would be either a pool wiki (as used for media files) described
here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wiki_family or not necessary
at all (all articles go into department wikis)
Thanks for you ideas on this,
Reinhard
Hi around,
can someone give me a hint where to find a _correct_ description of (title and text) search behavior?
Particularly:
- AND, OR, NOT - active or not? configurable?
- Wildcards - active or not? configurable?
- text search finds "Houses" in "[[House]]s" - in one version does in other not?!
Depends this on the used search engine?
Thanks.

Is it possible to completely erase edits from a wiki running mediawiki
1.8.1? If someone edits a page and puts some spam on it, is there a way
to completely remove this edit from the revision history?
I know I can revert/rollback changes but the spam still remains
accessible in the revision history. I want this to disappear completely
as if it never happened. Is this possible through the web interface or
do I have to go into the database directly?
My head is buzzing after an hour of browsing through manuals and
searching in various lists and sites... Thanks a lot!
Gerald
Hi,
I'd like to know if there is some way to add scrolling text to a
mediawiki page? I am presently running mediawiki 1.8.2 with Php 5.1.6
and MySQL 5.2.27.
I want to add something like a banner that advertises some new feature
or addition.
Also, what is the way to track changes on a certain page in a wiki. I
have not enabled SMTP on the wiki server. Any available inputs will be
great.
Thanks.

Just a quick question. I read through the documentation on the upgrade and
just wanted verbal email confirmation from the experts -- looks like
upgrading from 1.6.x to 1.8.2 is okay. I can skip going from 1.6.x to
1.7.x and then to 1.8.2. Right?
Hi,
I had mediawiki running on my server, on 6 subdomains (e.g. en, es, pt...languages) on my server. It was running on wikimanagerzone.com, which was also an addon domain of my main account falafelipao.com
Due to performance issues, I was recommended to make a switch, making wikimanagerzone.com my main host account and falafelipao the addon domain.
I did a complete backup, and now that I'm trying to make mediawiki work again, I'm getting the error message: [an error occurred while processing this directive].
To make the backup restoration work, what else do I need to change besides the LocalSettings.php file (connecting it to the databases)?
The only big changes that I know of from before and now, is that my databases have a different name and login now (which I adjusted in the LogalSettings file), and of course the change I mentioned in the second paragraph above. Did I miss anything? Are there other manual changes I need to make?
The issue kicks in when I do an import of the old database into the new one, after mediawiki is installed.
I'm running:
Operating system Linux
Kernel version 2.6.17-11_1.BHsmp
Apache version 1.3.37 (Unix)
PERL version 5.8.7
PHP version 5.1.6
MySQL version 4.1.21-standard-log
Thanks,
Anderson
I'm sorry if this is a newbie question. Last week I set up a wiki for the
first time and everything worked for several days. I was able to edit pages,
etc. During the work week I did not use the wiki and it's unlikely anyone else
did, unless someone just tripped over it. Yesterday, my site was down and I
got the following server error:
"Premature end of script headers: /home/xxxxx/public_html/wiki/index.php
Failed loading"
...when I try to go to the home page. The browser gives a "500 server error"
message. Given that I have not touched the site in days, does anyone have
any ideas what would cause this error in index.php?
Thanks,

Hi all,
I set up few wikis before but lately we've made mysql update and it seems something must have changed in its configuration, because i encounter problem during installation of wiki (doesn't matter which version i install:
Creating tables... using MySQL 4 table defs...Query "CREATE TABLE `user` ( user_id int(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, user_name varchar(255) binary NOT NULL default '', user_real_name varchar(255) binary NOT NULL default '', user_password tinyblob NOT NULL default '', user_newpassword tinyblob NOT NULL default '', user_email tinytext NOT NULL default '', user_options blob NOT NULL default '', user_touched char(14) binary NOT NULL default '', user_token char(32) binary NOT NULL default '', user_email_authenticated CHAR(14) BINARY, user_email_token CHAR(32) BINARY, user_email_token_expires CHAR(14) BINARY, user_registration CHAR(14) BINARY, PRIMARY KEY user_id (user_id), UNIQUE INDEX user_name (user_name), INDEX (user_email_token) ) TYPE=InnoDB " failed with error code "BLOB/TEXT column 'user_password' can't have a default value (localhost)".
Do you have any idea on that?

One of my users cannot edit a page. He is being automatically
blocked. How do I remove this auto-block? Un-blocking him won't
work.. he is still re-blocked at every edit attempt.
He is using a shared IP with some other users, none of which have been
editing pages.
I don't see a whitelist feature in 1.6.5's Special pages. I'd rather
just kill this feature since the site is private anyways.
It's odd, since the user is being blocked because that same user has
used the same IP before.
Some items have been removed for privacy:
