I have an old installation 1.5.x that we are ready to upgrade to newer
version.
We have been testing on a new box that I copied the 1.5.x install to, then
went through the upgrade process and made changes to.
Since then I see the latest stable is 1.8.x. My question is:
When I upgrade the 'test' instance from 1.7.x to 1.8.x, how can I get the
data out of the MySQL on the 1.5.x instance upgraded to the 1.8.x?
Can I just copy the database tables to the new system and run an update
database script? (I'm not sure there is one)
Am I going about this the hard way?
Andy.
So I've heard. Unfortunately, a) the fix is plastered all over the mediawiki FAQ and b) its confusing to a newbie becuase there is no $wgUrlProtocols being assigned in LocalSettings.php.
Yes, I'm both a newbie and confused! :)

Hi
You should _never_ edit DefaultSettings.php. Instead, make your changes in
LocalSettings.php.
Otherwise you will have issues with upgrading to a newer version of
mediawiki.

Philip,
In 1.7.1, I found the $wgUrlProtocols in /includes/DefaultSettings.php. Just add a comma after the last protocol in the array and add 'file://' to the end. Then file links will work just like external hyperlinks.
Also, there's a nifty extension called FileLinkExtension I think. It puts a button on the editor that brings up a dialog box for browsing for the file to link to.

You have to add the Protololl to the Variable $wgUrlProtocols in Localsettings.php (root directory of Wiki)
I have coppied the line of my wiki below
#Hinzufügen des Protokolls:"file:\\"
$wgUrlProtocols = 'http:\/\/|https:\/\/|ftp:\/\/|irc:\/\/|gopher:\/\/|news:|mailto:|file:\\\\';
To use it you have to use this syntax:
[file:\\server\share1$\myfolder\1 my link]
You are free to use slashes instead of backslashes in order to use it with *nix systems
Have fun

Sometimes we want to align an image in different ways other than just left and right, e.g.: "baseline, top, middle, textop, absmiddle, absbottom"
Also, it would be nice if I can specify a link for an image. I know I can do this using a DIV, but its hard to do it that way. If the link functionality was enabled, all I'd need to do is say:
And that would do it.
Any pointers on how to add these additional functionalities into the Image parser?
thanks
Eric

Hi,
1) Please use version 1.8.2 which fixed:
* (bug 7562) Fix non-ASCII namespaces on Windows/XAMPP servers
2) In setup select MySQL4 instead of MySQL5 which is marked as unstable.
Cheers Jimmy

Hello:
I've just upgraded from MediaWiki 1.4.11 to 1.8.1. The upgrade
appears to have gone ok. The only thing is now I have several
duplicate tables with "_old" appended to the table name; e.g.,
archive_old, categorylinks_old, image_old, imagelinks_old, etc.
Can these "old" tables be dropped from the db?
Thanks,
~Tricia

Hi-- I have been encountering a consistent error when trying to install
mediawiki 1.8.1 on XP SP2. I unistalled and reinstalled my PHP, mySQL and
Apache and updated all files, and the error continues to occur. I also
dropped the wiki db to retry and disabled windows firewall, but that didn't
help. I have found several reports of other encountering this error, but
found no solution and nothing in the help pages regarding it.
Any help much appreciated. Error message below.
