Hello..., I was wondering..., is there any extension that I can use to have a 'Featured article' section in my Main Page, as wikipedia does?
What I want exactly is some kind of tool that admins can use to select an article for that issue. Best wishes,
Yandry.

Not sure what magic words work with each versions, but this external hyperlink works in 1.7.1:
[mailto:?subject=Check%20this%20page%20out&body=You%20might%20be%20interested%20in%20this%20web%20page:%20{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}}} Tell a friend]
Of course its still a bit sloppy not to have the email sent by the wiki's server, but still, it works right NOW! :)

Erik,
I would agree with Robert - ideally you make a special page and add
an "email user" button in your skin.
If you want to go the "hackish" route use a mailto link and define
the subject/body. Of the top of my head, something like this might
work:
<A HREF="mailto:?subject=Foobar.com web page recommendation.&body=Hi,
You might be interested in this web page; <?php $this->text
('pageurl') ?>">Tell a friend</A>
Let me know if you implement a SpecialPage - as I would be interested
in also doing that on http://BluWiki.org

I'm getting a shared package and wanting to install MediaWiki there.
It's Linux hosting and has all the prerequisites. My question is this:
what is it I am supported to download, and install? I think I'm
supposed to download the tar.gz file, but then what? Do I upload it
(via FTP) to my webspace, and if so, will it unpack itself or what? I
run Windows XP on my desktop. For the record, I haven't purchased the
package yet, so I can't try things out yet, just want advice.
Thanks

Hi,
For some time I've been using the following syntax successfuly on
Mediawiki 1.5.x:
[[Image:document-xyz.pdf | My document XYZ]] which used to produce the
following output as a link to the "Image:" page:
My document XYZ
Now this doesn't work anymore, at least with mediawiki 1.5.6 and 1.5.7
and for the same syntax I just see this link as if no alias had been
given after the pipe:
Image:document-xyz.pdf
Is there any reason why I should observe that ? I have noticed that the
following alternative syntax works as I want it to work but I wonder if
this is the right way to do it (I added a colon at the beginning):
[[:Image:document-xyz.pdf | My document XYZ]]
Thanks for your help,
Regards,

I need more control over edit tabs and the instances in which they appear.
hooks.txt states:
SkinTemplateContentActions': after building the $content_action array right
before returning it, see content_action.php in the extension module for a
demonstration of how to use this hook.
In the 1.7.1 package I recently downloaded, I found no "content_action.php"
file in the extensions directory or anywhere in the package. From all I've
read in hooks.txt and elsewhere, a hook titled 'SkinTemplateContentActions'
exposes logic controlling tabs at the top of each page (article, discussion,
edit, etc.) and preferences can be set with the content_action.php page. Without
that page, I can't find even a demonstration of how tabs can be manipulated.
Is content_action.php still part of the main Mediawiki installation, and if
not, where can I find the extension that includes it? _Twenty_

I'm trying to put together a wiki for an Architectural
firm.
1. They want categories somewhat like you have in
Twiki. However, I've had a look at Twiki and I find
it pretty difficult to get to grips with so I imagine
it'll be user unfriendly in the firm. Is there a way
of changing the side bar if you navigate to a category
page? ie the sidebar becomes the subcategory bar when
you get to the selected category.
2. What level of user access control is there in
mediawiki? We're after 'locking down' certain pages
and leaving others open to editing by just about
everybody.
TIA
Nicholas

On MacOS X Safari, you simply press CMD-I to send the whole page in
HTML, or SHIFT-CMD-I to send a link to the page.
Don't other browsers have something similar?

Well I was indeed running php 5.0.4 on an X86_64 machine in 64 bit mode.
I built the 5.1.4 using the Fedora 5 source RPMS and upgraded.
I then restored my mediawiki 1.7 database and reran the upgrade process.
I still have no access to the special pages and can't log in.
Any other ideas?

Are you running PHP 5.x on an x86_64 (AMD64) machine? If so, upgrade to
PHP 5.1. Older versions of PHP are broken on 64-bit, which ends up
corrupting data.
