Trade Assoc. Applies New Use of Wikis
http://www.renewableenergyaccess.com/rea/news/story?id=41249
-"A Wiki is a type of website that allows users to add and edit content that is suited for collaborative authoring," and the Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition (OREC) has found a way to put this new technology to work. In their attempts to bring together the views of an entire industry on dry, but critically important, new regulations from the Department of Interior's Minerals Management Service, OREC has set-up a website that allows its members to contribute their thoughts all in one place. 1/4/2006 5:36 PM
I am Puzzlet Chung, one of the administrators in Korean Wikipedia.
User:WonYong (also in en.wp) in Korean Wikipedia claims that Korean
Wikipedia should follow South Korean National Security Law so that the
contents potentially able to threat the nation (i.e. South Korea)
should be censored. He made National Security violation templates, to
tag "anti-State" articles which should be deleted:
http://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:National_Securityhttp://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:National_Security2
WonYong insists that it is South Korea that try to conserve Korean
language and protect it from extinction, hence both administration and
contents of Korean Wikipedia should follow South Korean laws, and
Korean language speakers who is not South Korean citizens don't have
anything to do with it. He states that North Korea is not recognized
by South Korea as a nation but a "band of mafias," (the statement of
which is not true, since North Korea is a member of UN, and relation
between two Koreas has changed), and doesn't deserve for Korean
Wikipedia to reflect its POV.
The problem is that some users would agree to his point of view. Out
of two Korean [[names of Korea]], some South Koreans relate "Chosŏn"
with North Korea and Communism. They think equal juxtaposition of two
names, (juxtapose the names when they have to, of course), as not
satisfying Natural Point of View as in South Korea, where the majority
of the Korean Wikipedia users live in, and where the server is located
as well. Although "Chosŏnmal" is the name of Korean language called
not only by North Koreans, but majority of Chinese Koreans and some
Japanese Koreans, some find "Chosŏnmal" aggressive and inappropriate
to use it in some articles.
I am a South Korean citizen myself, but as far as I understand
Wikipedian policy of NPOV, WonYong's activity threats NPOV more than
the "Evil Wikipedia" would threat the existence of South Korea, not
like what he might think, as long as Wikipedia is not a some kind of
Communists' propaganda. But I've started to seriously consider about
moving DB server back to Florida and "foreigning" the site,
contributed by so-called foreigns and South Koreans who's not afraid
of South Korean laws.

I think anyone who is going to administer a MediaWiki site would
benefit from learning something about MySQL.
If you're someone who does a lot of web stuff, that learning would
not be limited to one application, either, as the PHP/MySQL combo is
used on hundreds of free web applications.
There are also numerous GUI tools for administering a MySQL database,
that span the range from free to thousands of dollars. My favorite
(although it lacks a thing or two that cause me to run off to some
other tool now and then) is phpMyAdmin, which is free.
As when learning anything, work on a backup. Record the manual steps
you take to accomplish your goal. Then try to do them in a script.
Then instead of ranting, submit your work for the benefit of all, and
become a famous contributor, rather than an infamous ranter!

I'm attempting to install MediaWiki on a sub domain of my website, as in:
http://wikifilm.riddleplayersproductions.com
On the installation screen, I've got everything else down properly, at
least nothing is giving me an error message still, except for the
MySQL server. I thought it was simply just typing the server that the
database was on, as in riddleplayersproductions.com or
wikifilm.riddleplayersproductions.com, but apparently this is not so.
It's giving me the error message of,"Couldn't connect to database
(2005)"
What am I suppose to enter for this field?
Many thanks,
Brian
A while back a developer posted:

My email is just to request that a blog feature be added to MediaWiki.
Perhaps a blog link on each user's mail wiki page that can be enabled by
the site administrator? A bonus would be having a site-wide option to
make the blog's only editable by the blog owner.
When the Mozilla Foundation migrated developer.mozilla.org to the
MediaWiki, one of the things I noticed at the time was that they use
something else for the developer blogs. Perhaps if the MediaWiki had
this feature it could be used for everything?
Enjoy,
Jeff
Due to space limitation, I would like to delete all history. I previously
compressed these but having problem with search so I decided to delete them
all. Is there a script that does this? If not, which table so I delete
these but keep the current copy?
Thank you very much
Hello
Could somebody tell me please how to change the
style of my title in my wiki? I would like to have
"index.php\Title" instead of "index.php?title=Title".
I don't even know if this is a PHP/Apache
configuration issue or does it come from a bad wiki
setup. PLZ help and thanks in advance.
Sincerely, Levente

Hello!
We would like to transfer a big CMS-System to a brandnew Wiki-System.
As everything was done with HTML we would love to get a good filter
where we put HTML in and get Wiki-Syntax out - i know such filters exist
for Word & Co....
Any ideas, links or hints?
Would be great.
Happy new Year,
Martin
