Hopefully there is a really easy way to do this, and I've just failed to
find in the documentation how to do it...
Is there any way to set up a page so that it lists information that people
contribute, as well as provides a listing of all the pages that link to it.
e.g.
------------------------------------------------------
[Aldon Hynes]
Aldon Hynes lives in [Connecticut]
------------------------------------------------------
[Jim Dean]
Jim Dean lives in [Connecticut]
------------------------------------------------------
[Connecticut]
Connecticut has five congress people. Important people
that live in Connecticut include:
*** At this point, it would list me and Jim. If someone
set up a new page which also included [Connecticut] that
would automatically show up in the list ***
------------------------------------------------------
or
-------------------------------------------------------
[cat]
A cat is a type of [mammal] that humans often keep as a pet
-------------------------------------------------------
[cow]
A cow is a type of [mammal] that humans often raise for get milk
-------------------------------------------------------
[mammal]
A mammal is a type of [animal] that nurses its young.
For mammals list here, please see:
*** At this point, it would list cats and cows. If someone
set up a new page which also included [mammal] that
would automatically show up in the list ***

To be pedantic, but also kind of helpful, I feel I should point out
that adding them at the end of the page is just a *convention* to make
editting them easier. The software will recognise them *wherever* they
come in the wikitext, but they will always *appear* (in the displayed
article) seperately from the main text and *not* wherever in the text
you actually typed them.
e.g. the text:
> A nefle is a that ...
will add the article to the category fine, but will show up as something like:
> A nefle is a that ...
> ----------------------------
> Categories: Fruit
so instead you might use
> A nefle is a fruit that ...
>
so that the first sentence still makes sense after the category link
"disappears"
(See my earlier response for a help page that may or may not explain
it better than that.)

Depending on exactly what it is this filter is *for*, that might well
be a very good name for it - i.e. if it's a reasonably generic
implementation of what was originally called "InterMap"
, "InterWiki" seems to
be the commonly used term for such. As an example of an existing
non-wiki implementation, I cite Advogato:
http://advogato.org/person/raph/diary.html?start=97http://cvs.ghostscript.com/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/cvs/mod_virgule/mod_virgule/…
I must say I'm not sure where "wmfilter" came from - did you mean
"mwfilter", as in "MediaWiki filter"? (I expect you know this, but
note http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Names - "wm" makes me think
"Wikimedia", which is something completely different; but that's
probably coincidence to why you called it that...)

I may be being a bit conservative about this, but "interwiki" is kind
of a standard term in the wikiworld, and has stuck despite very early
on being co-opted for more general linkage. More to the point, it
seems a rather strange compromise to rewrite part of MediaWiki so that
you can rename an external tool to something that matches a new
internal name.
I note, however, that you say Drupal encourages tables to be
*prefixed* appropriately - are you aware that recent versions of
MediaWiki have the ability to prefix all table names in an install, to
allow them to co-exist on the same mysql server with other projects?
If you really really want your module to be named to tie in with
MediaWiki, why not call it "mediawiki"; that way, the interwiki table
could be called "mediawiki.interwiki", and everyone's happy, and
you've even used the prefixing concept as it was probably intended.

Hi, all. I've co-written a module for Drupal installations that makes
it easier for Drupal sites to link to Wiki pages. The module is
called "wmfilter.module" and can be downloaded at the following URL:
http://drupal.org/node/14980
The module uses the same interwiki table as MediaWiki. We did it this
way because we want to make it as easy as possible in the future to
develop other ways that MediaWiki and Drupal can interoperate. One
issue this has created, however, is the fact that the name of the
module ("wmfilter") is different from the name of the table
("interwiki"). This is a bit of a problem in Drupal, whose modular
design is intended to let people add their own functionality to the
software. To avoid namespace collisions, Drupal encourages module
writers to prefix any new tables associated with their module with
the same name as the module itself.
One possibility for reconciling this dilemma would be to rename
"wmfilter" to "interwiki." However, this isn't a terribly descriptive
name for the module, and in fact the name "interwiki" isn't even
terribly descriptive of the way the table is used in MediaWiki
itself. The standard MediaWiki installation currently comes with a
number of records in the interwiki table that point to non-wiki
websites. In practice, "interwiki" has developed into a table of
general interlinks rather than simply a table of interwiki links. I'm
wondering, therefore, if there would be an interest on the part of
MediaWiki developers in renaming the interwiki table in MediaWiki to
something such as "interlinks" or "linkfilter."

I have two question I can't solve by myself (I tried to search on google
and mediawiki pages)
- How can I change the default page from Wikipedia?
- How can I change the default menu's links?
Thanks in advance for your work.

Hi,
yeah, that's my question ;)
Is the latex depencendy only for when you're about to provide latex rendered

Rick & Jan - Thanks for the quick replies.
I have tried to position even with the second vertical bar, as you both
mentioned but i still get no results. i checked out the source and this is
what appears:
\\a href="/wiki/index.php/Image:Test.png" class="image"
title="test|right|"><img src="/wiki/images/d/d9/Test.png" alt="test|right|"
/></a\\
it seems the alignment function isnt recognized at all for some weird
reason. could this be a persmissions problem on the php script file or
folder? if im able to manually insert the div class "floatright" and get it
to work that means that its probably using some php script to call this
class from a stylesheet right? im still very confused as to why this is not
working, and any more help would be appreciated.

The last vertical bar is not optional. Without it the right is
interpreted as alt/caption text and NOT as a formating option. You
need

This might have worked somewhat differently in earlier versions of
MediaWiki. It seems to be somewhat "under construction." In fact the
article about extended image syntax in the Wikipedia doesn't do alt
text/captions exactly as it says it should in all cases.

I'm pretty sure that image resizing, whether for thumbnails or in
general, requires either the GD library or the ImageMagick external
program. ImageMagick may not work on all platforms. On my 1.3.x
installation on Linux, I've got the following lines in my
LocalSettings.php file:
$wgUseImageResize = true;
$wgUseImageMagick = true;
$wgImageMagickConvertCommand = "/usr/bin/convert";
hi all, new user to this list as well as mediawiki. i just recently
installed the stable release of mediawiki (1.3.10). Installation went fine
and mostly everything is working correctly except for one thing. I can not
get images i've uploaded to align either left or right. ive checked the
mediawiki syntax for this a million times and everything ive tried doesnt
work. When im editing a page, i enter:

*i read that you can also add another vertical bar at the end of right so
that "right" does not appear as the alt text.
i've tested this on other mediawiki installations (older versions, on
seperate servers, etc) and it works. On my mediawiki, the image is just
positioned left and the text is cleared right below it. i checked the
source code and "right" appears as the alt text for some reason. im not
really sure if this function is a setting i have to turn on or something. i
know that you can just add html (div class="floatright") when editing and it
will work, but that is sorta cumbersome for the average users editing this
wiki.
This is a fresh installtion of mediawiki. I have gone through and adjusted
all the suggested security settings. i do not have the GD Library
installed. Permissions are set to read only, except for the image folder.
any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
-tim
p.s. i know that the thumbnailing function is not enabled if GD library is
not installed, but i should still be able to resize my images right? using
this syntax:

it should just resize using html correct? maybe this problem is connected
to the above one?
Hello,
I run MediaWiki 1.4beta6 on a Linux PHP server. The magic_quotes_runtime
variable is set to "1" (cannot change this). Is it possible that this
causes problemes? ' is shown as \' and " as \".
Can somebody confirm this? Will this be fixed in future versions? Thanks!
Regards,
Bernhard
