My vote is for mail-back authorization on account creation. Maybe
I'll just do it...
One way that I've eliminated ALL spam is strictly by accident: I
changed the account creation page. I wanted to have first/last name
fields, which I then concat to make the user name. This apparently
confuses spambots enough that they don't even bother.

Hi.
I've tried to find information on creating and updating pages using
command line scripts but, so far, have found little information.
I'd like to take a set of text files and push them to my wiki using a
shell script. Is there a documented way to do this? I wanted to avoid
directly updating the underlying database if possible.
Thank you.
Cheers,

Hi. I was doing a search for the string "favicon" and noticed the repeated occurance in my apache2 error log :
[Mon Nov 07 15:13:42 2005] [error] [client 10.1.1.1] File does not exist: /home/wiki2/mediawiki/favicon.ico
The error makes sense in that the favicon.ico file is in the skins/common/images directory. What doesn't make sense is that the $wgStylePath looks to be ok and does point to the skins directory.

Hey Group,
Just noticing that the standard favicon for my media wiki doesn¹t display in
the address field. I¹m using Safari, but I don¹t think it¹s my browser.
Other sites favicons display fine including the one on mediawiki.org.
Is there something I must enable in the LocalSettings.php file?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Matt :)

I've experienced the same Spammer. I've enabled the SpamBlacklist
Extension and added the SpamRegex entries mentioned earlier and this has
taken care of it for now.
I would really like to see a CAPTCHA for mediawiki. Ideally, this would
be an extension or option that one could enable that would ask for
verification only when creating a new account. One exists now that asks
on every edit, but I feel like this is too much for our users.
Also, all of the accounts created by our spammer have invalid e-mail
addresses. If something could verify that the e-mail was legit before
enabling the account, that would be useful as well.

Hello,
I hope this is the right place to request some support for this subject.
Our wiki (http://www.wikimac.fr) has been vandalized and even though
I found some informations on the mediawiki site, I can't really
figure out how to resolve quickly this problem and how to protect our
wiki to avoid such a problem again.
1) Is there any quick way to recover the pages that have been erase
without having to go on the history and recover the content article
after article ?
2) I guess to avoid this problem, the best way would be to move our
wiki to version 1.5, is that right and is there some extra things to
do on the default install to protect it ?
3) Is there a place where I can post (if this can help) the IP that
vandalized our wiki ?
Thank you for your precious help
Cyril

I have an old private scratch 1.4.x installation I just want to
throw out completely before installing 1.5.2.
Beyond deleting the wiki directory, I presume that I just need
to drop all the MediaWiki MySQL tables.
Is there a reference script to do this anywhere? (My searches
haven't turned one up, nor any specific instruction for a complete
MediaWiki uninstall/wipe.)
Thanks for any pointers.
