Scheduling regular backups?

I've looked in the doc on www.wikimedia.org but I couldn't find what I'm looking for. Is there a way to insert a thumbnail like [[Image:blabla.jpg|thumb|Bla Bla]] where I wrote the tag instead of having it appear to the right? Thanks!

Character equivalence

Hello, all fellow Wikimedians, As the mediawiki software is set up to this day, "Pokémon" has nothing to do with "Pokemon", "Pinata" has nothing to do with "Piñata", and "deja vu" has nothing to do with "déjà vu". The only reason these can be found by their common mispellings in the English Wikipedia using the search function is because our hard-working English-speaking friends have considered all of the common spelling errors and have created redirects from "Pokemon", for example, to "Pokémon". Of course this is easier in English than in French because the only accented words in English are stolen from other languages. In French, however (as well as Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, Catalan, and plenty of others), accented words are common and if I use Wikipedia's search engine to look for [[fr:Société Générale]] ( http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale) with "Societe Generale", or let's say I only forgot about one of the accents, and put "Societé Générale" in the search box, I get nothing I was looking for, only pages that are slightly relevant because they made the same spelling error as I did or they contain one of those words, with a completely different meaning, surely ( http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=Societe+Generale&fulltex…). However, if I use google for the same task ( http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&lr=&domains=fr.wikipedia.org&q=So…), the page I'm looking for is the very first one, nifty, eh? This is because google, understandably, is a bit smarter than mediawiki, Google has a list of equivalent (or at least similar) characters so that anytime the gringo comes out in me and I decide I want to beat up a "pinata", google understands and gives me a "piñata" (thanks, google). The idea is to implement the same or a similar mechanism in Wikimedia wikis so that, back to our old example, "societe generale", "sócíété générálé", "societë gënëräl" etc etc, all return "société générale", instead of nothing, as they do now. It is true, there may be some false results generated, but as it is, the search is rather exclusionist. The proposal is not to create any automatic redirects ([[Societe Generale]] redirected to [[Société Générale]], for example), but would only affect the search function to avoid the possibility that "Societe Generale" is the name of my sister's mom's dad's uncle's band...or whatever, Thanks for your time.

Debugging LDAP Authentication

Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm a mediawiki and php newbie... I'm trying to get the LDAP Authentication to work. I've successfully done a bind to the LDAP from the Mediawiki box using a short php script, but I cannot get the LDAP authentication to work. I'm sure I could get this to work if I could see what is happening behind the scenes. How can I output or log the results of the various stages in Ldapauthentication.php?

I found what I needed to make the LDAP auth happen here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LDAP_Authentication and here: http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=814 I'm basically using the examples given. I don't think LdapAuthentication.php comes with 1.5, you need to get it from one of those links. Make sure the openldap acls let you do an anonymous search, unless you're planning to use a proxy agent. To check your ldap connection from the machine running your wiki, you might try this first without tls, etc., just to make sure you're not having an acl issue. From the command line, even in OSX: ldapsearch -x -h <ldaphost> -b dc=my-domain,dc=com uid=lbatti Jeff

Graphviz diagrams

I've installed the extension described here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GraphViz And it does work. However, the diagrams aren't nicely antialiased (i.e. curves smooth -- no jagged lines) like those in the second mediawiki samples site here: http://www.islandseeds.org/wiki/Test:Graphviz Does anyone know how to get nicely antialiasing diagrams like this from the GraphViz extension? Hi Andrew, It should be the same page, most likely you have run into a caching issue... Try emptying your browser cache or hold down shift and press the refresh button on the page. (Hopefully the changes should show up) You could also try doing a preview after editing the page, apparently that usually avoids caching issues. I used your tip to edit my sidebar as well, oddly enough it changes the sidebar for all pages except the main page. Is therea differant special page for the main page sidebar? which namespaces to use

I am setting up a mediawiki to use for 2 main purposes: 1. a wikipedia on a specialized topic (in community sustainable development) 2. a forum for public consultations, where information will be posted and the public given a chance to provide feedback and hold discussions Looking at how wikipedia.org is set up, I am wondering if I should hold the wikipedia in the blank namespace and the public consultations in the "portal" namespace? Or will uneducated users forget to include the "portal:" when creating new internal links in the consultations area, so I should put both 1 and 2 in the blank namespace? Or should I create a new namespace, like "casestudy"? Never having set up a wiki before, I'm just don't have an intuition on how these decisions will turn out once many people are using the wiki, and I suspect it could be very hard to change later.
