Given that there are several headers on every message from the mailing
list that will positively identify the message as coming from a
mailing list already, is there really any need to make the subject
lines scroll the right end of the screen by adding grandiose tags with
the list name to the start of every list message? The only obvious
use for such tags that I see is waste space and make the list harder
to read.

So I have need to add custom namespaces to my project. I find tons of
pages that tell me to modify wgExtraNamespages in LocalSettings.php,
however this variable is not given an example config in my file and I
have no idea what the proper format is supposed to be for this.
Can anyone tell me, or give me a link as to how I should format this pref?

We just set up a mediawiki to discuss some open source software now
under initial development but have been annoyed with several problems:
Clicking on a selection in the navigation sidebar often gives a generic
not-found message until the target page has been accessed through an
embedded link.
Clicking on an embedded link or an edit tab or a preview or save button
often results in a two line gobbledegook error message, but the second
or third try after backing up usually works just fine. Sometimes the
message occurs for save but the page is saved anyway.
Text that is indented is rendered in a dashed box despite no such hint
in the user guide. It doesn't even contain all the text in many cases.
Surrounding an indented line with <nowiki> and </nowiki> suppresses the
box but loses the indent.
Are we doing something wrong?

I have to move my database to another server, yes, it's corrupt, but there seems to be no way to move only the current pages, so, how do I backup and move my database?
I've tried exporting from phpmyadmin but I only get the first four tables. How do i get the entire thing?
my database is already partially corrupt, and I'm moving it to a new server. Is there anyway I can get mediawiki to spew out only the current versions of the pages so i can put them in a new install of 1.3.3 ?
If I upload an html file to the MediaWiki, it treats it like a media item - a link to the file takes me to a page which shows revision history rather than the page itself. Is there a syntax to link directly to the page?
Hi, I want to set up a single default skin for my wiki and remove all others. In other words, I don't want to have user selectable skins.
How would I go about doing this.
I have created a MediaWiki site and it really looks good, but
the search button doesn't seem to work: it only works for a very
small set of words, and that quite erratically.
Do I need to set up something, for example, run an index building
script everyday? Or is it that I don't have to do anything normally
but something must have been messed up, for example, by me editing
the sidebar template?
I'm using MediaWiki 1.3.0, PHP 4.3.8, MySQL 3.23.58.
Thanks.

If I understand what you are asking for, you can use the substitution ("subst") syntax with a template.
For example, lets says you have Template:foo with the outline you talked about. When you create a new article, you can put {{subst:foo}} in the edit box and press Show Preview. This will display the content of Template:foo at the top, but still show "{{subst:foo}}" in the edit box (but only temporarily, until you save). You can either
- save, and then re-edit the article and customize the text (although this creates one extra edit, no big deal) or
- copy the text from the previewed text into the edit box (which only works if there is no formatting, as that will be lost).
This is more fully explained in the template help:

Subject: [Mediawiki-l] Templates - not understanding a concept
Hello, all.
I have a question about templates. I understand that they are excellent for
building things that one might wish to repeat on many pages, so having the
template saves a lot of extra work. Not only that, if you need to update the
content, you need only update the template, and the changes show up everywhere.
That part I get, but here is what I'm wondering:
If I had a page structure that I wanted people to use, would that be
appropriately done with a template? For example, if I had a few sections, like
"Description", "Requirements", "Download" etc., would it make sense to build a
template with those pre-built as section headings? Could I then create custom
stubs and include them in the template? The custom stub would be like "Add the
product description here, blah, blah, blah."
I have this in mind because there will be a lot of pages that we want to look
exactly alike, save for the actual content. How could I set this up so that they
use the template to start a new page from scratch?
Hmm...lots of questions in this one. Thank you in advance for your assistance in
clarifying my understanding of templates.
