hi,
The recent release of the film Dam 999 made me want to read up on the Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala around which this film is shot and there are contrarian claims as to whether the film is about this dam or not. However, the article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullaperiyar_Dam - seems to have become a venue for both sides of the controversy to raise their points.
I have created a section on the talk page aimed at improving the article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mullaperiyar_Dam#Improving_Mullaperiyar_Da.... Request help from English language Wikipedians to improve this article.
Thanks in advance,
warm regards, Pradeep Mohandas

Pradeep, A very thoughtful idea. I noticed that you nominated it for a COTM. However, I also feel that the Malayalam and tamil articles ALSO need some attention. -Re, Srikanth Rsrikanth05.

hi,
I hope the Tamil and Malayalam wikipedia communities also take this forward within themselves. The only other language that this article is in is French. If there are people who know the language and contribute to that Wikipedia, they might also be interested?
Thanks Srikanth (Rsrikanth05), also for suggesting that I nominate this article for COTM. Also, thank Ashwin for then cleaning up the COTM pages and sending out an email to this list.
warm regards, Pradeep

Hi, I've been working on this article for the past two days when Pradeep and I came across this problem. We need references for the location of this dam. Most [Haven't read all] articles say that this dam is located on the Periyar River. There is ONLY one source that states that this dam is located on the confluence of the Mullayar and Periyar. This source is published by the ENVIS Kerala: Environmental Information System Centre (ENVIS), Kerala. Pradeep and I had a small discussion over phone and Twitter and came to a conclusion that this may NOT be suitable as it is an article from Kerala. Right now we need a neutral source, preferably from the Central Government. If anybody finds such a source, PLEASE do add it. Note, that there is a standard format for adding citations, sadly that isn't being followed. Do note, please do not add links to blogs and forums.
Alternatively, if someone can go to the dam with a camera capable of recording audio and video, talk with an official of the EB/ID of whoever [TN or KL] pointing out to the details and try and make an Oral Citation of the matter, we'd all be happy. --Regards,

Use ENVIS Kerala, per YES:POV. I suggest such discussions should take place on wiki.

There are 2 issues here.
1. Oral citation is still in research phase. 2. Even if it were to be used, I remember it advocated the use of it only on non-controversial subjects.
Achal / Shiju correct me if am wrong.
Why is there a section called "operation". The information already exists in the History section and no new details are available?

hi,
A few of the interesting articles written about the Dam were by Major (later Colonel) John Pennycuick, considered the "Chief Engineer" of the Dam. He wrote about his for the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1897. The edition can be found here.[1] The edition contains chapters on the "Diversion of the Periyar" and "The Periyar Tunnel" followed by discussion and correspondences on the same. I really wish we did more stuff like this in 2011, but that is a different discussion.
Interestingly, these articles - dated to 1897 (!!!) are pay-walled. Each of the article I mentioned above costs GBP 18!
Help is needed on trying to get these articles so that they can inform the Wikipedia article now under Collaboration of the Month. I am hoping to write to the UK Wikimedia Chapter and the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK to see if copies of these can be obtained. Does anyone on-list see any possibility of getting a copy otherwise?
