Greetings all. I've got a 2.4.0 installation that is really starting to take off. I'm having a big problem with spam (only registered users can post, but still have the problem).
I'd appreciate knowing if I can upgrade directly to the current version, or if there are some intermediate upgrades I have to do first. (I should have been upgrading all along, I know).
Also, any pointers to eliminating the spam problem would be greatly appreciated!

Your Special:Version seems to say 1.4.0. :)

When I was still on 1.4.x, I kept up to date with the latest version, then installed 1.5.0 and used the updater script. While you may be able to jump directly to 1.6, the other path isn't going to take much more time. And it's pretty much guaranteed to have been tested by others.
As for the spam, I think someone will probably chime in about the SpamBlacklist extension on meta: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/SpamBlacklist_extension
I just upgraded from a 1.4.4 straight to 1.6.5, following the steps at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Upgrading_MediaWiki#Minor_Version . It all worked very smoothly - the installation process is very clear and user-friendly.
