When I was still on 1.4.x, I kept up to date with the latest version, then
installed 1.5.0 and used the updater script. While you may be able to jump
directly to 1.6, the other path isn't going to take much more time. And
it's pretty much guaranteed to have been tested by others.
As for the spam, I think someone will probably chime in about the
SpamBlacklist extension on meta:
