Is there a safe way to delete all old revisions for all pages? I understand that there's some database hackery which I could do, but I wanted to check if there was either a script or some assurance that said database hackery was somewhat safe.

None whatsoever. If you want to play it safe, don't delete revisions.

So.. there having been no functionality engineered for this situation, it means that the size of the database will spiral out of control...

I note that those at WikiMedia have not felt the need to delete revisions. (If you think you have it bad, think about en.wikipedia.org.)
If you really need the space, you can compress old revisions.
Otherwise, the only thing you can do is to hack the DB.

The fact that I do many minor edits means that I've been bloating my database. It's something that's somewhat offensive to my senses so I went looking for a solution.
WikiMedia and I have different points of view. I'm the only author of my wiki, and I have no need to keep *very old* revisions except perhaps in an archive stored on the side, and maybe not even then.
I also don't like that I've got these pseudo-deleted pages floating around clogging things up..
Well, I understand that mediawiki will finally be able to store revisions instead of complete pages for every diff Real Soon Now.. that would make me happier.
Right now I'm just doing mysql dumps for backups.. it hasn't been that big of a deal, although my database is somewhere over 80MB.. this will make it increasingly more inconvenient as time passes. I may look into dumping changes past a certain date or some such voodoo.
