Hi everyone,
As I have been talking to third-party MW users quite a lot recently, I notice that one of the major issues they are facing is the lack of visibility on MW.org. I have seen some previous work like that has been reverted because WMF does not want to endorse any external parties on mw.org. However, at the same time I see some pages featuring such users such as http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_testimonials and http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_with_BitNami. So my question here is how much is acceptable?
I think it would be helpful for both the third-party community and for MW itself to give third-party users more visibility. It will help third-party users know about each other and support each other, get more involved with the community and possibly attract more business. At the same time having some success stories visible is likely to attract more MediaWiki users, while a thriving and engaged third-party community is likely to bring more innovation to the software itself.
I have been working on some lists of wiki farms, consultants, developers, hosting companies and interesting installations for my internship, which you can see here. However, I am wondering if I could give the lists a little more visibility with a disclaimer on top that WMF does not in any way endorse the listed companies and guarantee for the quality of their service. Also, I think updating and revitalizing the http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_testimonials page is a good idea. Another way to give some users visibility is having featured projects of the month or something like that, which would require someone's consistent involvement, however.
How much do you think is acceptable?
Mariya
Sorry, forgot to add a link to the lists - http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Third-party_MediaWiki_users_discussion/Contact... .

Hi,
I am building a Wiki which is partly for internal usage, partly open for the public. As regards pdf and other files, it would be ideal to have a second FILE namespace, which could be set up for internal usage. Is this possible?

Proposals welcome.

It would be useful to know about these reverts in order to understand the reasons and how we all can do better next itme.

Totally acceptable?
The only limitations I can think of are the usual: unmaintained, broken or unsecure software, misleading use of trademarks or ownership... Other than that this is a free software project interested in promoting the activities of the community and remarkable uses done by third parties.
Hi Quim,
Looks like I was very distracted writing this email :)

I had in mind the http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Jobs/Archive discussion as well as an email I received from a company that created a User profile, which was deleted as spam. There are probably other cases.

Those are posts from 2007. Nowadays I believe it is safe to say that all we would benefit from a Jobs page open to anybody willing to hire someone for MediaWiki development related jobs.

It's worth discussing. I'm inclined to agree with those comments from 2007 fwiw.

Can you share your reasons? Here or that talk page.
Free software projects big / complex enough to have professionals specialized on them tend to have a Jobs section at their websites or somewhere nearby.
It is usually the interest of any free software community to have people working on their technologies full time. Having a place to advertise positions helps. The WMF is the biggest employer and has to put plenty of effort to reach out. The situation of smaller companies willing to hire MediaWiki developers is a lot worse.

Somewhere nearby is fine, which is why I've got no problems with linking to third party sites. I just don't think it's our job (as the MediaWiki community) to list these jobs.

Mmm ok.
I have done a couple of edits to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Jobs
Now http://www.mwusers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?43-MediaWiki-Market appears at the top and there is a new link to the MediaWiki skills page at LinkedIn.
Mariya, this page is virtually orphan as it is. Feel free connecting it to the other "professional" pages you are sorting out these days.

That's a really good idea, actually - linking to other stable MW job markets, rather than trying to run one on the wiki.

Hi,
Maybe I didn't make it clear enough. I am not advocating for posting particular jobs as in "We are looking to hire a developer for this and that for that much an hour" or anything of that sort. I was just wondering if it would be useful to link to a page of one-click isntallation providers, wiki farms, and stacks like BitNami from the download page or to link to a list of developers and consultants from relevant pages, etc. Of course, with a disclaimer that WMF does not endorse these outside parties.
Also, would it be considered OK to have a page of success stories, where people share what they do wth MediaWiki, why they chose MW,etc. similar to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_testimonials but not focused on intranet only.

Haha sounds good to me if that's the way it works, I'm not afraid of failing:)
If anyone has specific suggestions of what 3-rd party user groups should be linked to from what pages, please share.
