Is there a way to reintegrate a datase which was backed up into a new installation of MediaWiki or is this a lost cause? I'm running on Windows XP right now with MeiaWiki 1.8.2.
Reintegration is difficult, but may be possible, depending on how the backup was made. Using a backup to seed a new wiki is possible (as I have done that before).
Possibly you could use that new wiki to generate an XML extract of the current text of all the articles (using the dumpBackup.php script if I recall correctly). And import that XML extract back into the running wiki. At least all the text should be there.
Existing articles will be replaced by the new, imported text, but I read a comment from Brion once, indicating that the old / original version will be available in the history.
Good luck.

Did you take a look at the phpAdmin-Backup? I used it to move the content of a wiki to my notebook-wiki (local installation).
