It seems to be a database problem, which would make sense as I haven't been given the option to update the schema or anything. Don't know what to do. Help appreciated! Thanks

You should really run the 'configuration/setup' of the wiki. You can trigger this by moving the 'LocalSettings.php' out of the way. This will trigger the setup. (Which will upgrade the database). It will also generate a new Localsettings.php file. Carefully merge both versions....

ah ha. so as long as i know the db user and password, and my includes - the only modifications i've made - just delete LocalSettings.php? then navigate to domain/wiki ? That would be much easier. Thanks! Oh, then enter the same settings in the installer, and add my includes later? Thanks!

Better to NOT DELETE the LocalSettings.php, but save it first. This file also contains your database settings (db, user, password) as well as any customizations you made.
Keep it somewhere safe and compare it against the results from the setup/configuration.

Or, see Rob Churches comments on your original message. Which does the same, by hand.

Yeah. I'll rename it LocalSettings.php.old. or just copy the contents into an online word processor. My internet is down at the moment (using mobile to send and rec email) but I will be able to do that at the library later. Can anyone recommend a good online ftp client? I seem to remember net2ftp not working last time I tried...

Retain a .php extension, otherwise requests for the file will be served as plain text, exposing database connection details.

Oops! Good thinking. I'll keep what I call it to myself then :P
