I can't seem to find a way to specify the [[Image]] tag to avoid a dead spot of whitespace to the right or left of the TOC. This looks especially bad if there's a photo floating right or left to the body of the text; it just creates a big wasted whitespace in the middle. Ideally I'd like to be able to get some text in there. Is there any good way to do that?
Here's an example of what I'm talking about on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saitama_Prefecture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_theory
you mean like [[Image:foo.png|left|some image]]?

Can you expand on that thought a little? The TOC is an automatically generated element; thus I am not sure exactly how you'd specify it as a table element.
So you want text to wrap around the TOC? Or a table?
It can be done pretty easy via CSS. On regular tables, give them the class "tright" or "tleft". On TOCs, edit MediaWiki:Monobook.css to include the property "float: right" or "float: left" for #toc.

You can also put "align=right" in a table. See how the images are vertically aligned and floated on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X11 . (I often lay stuff out using an image to fill that yawning void next to the TOC.) Then it'll work for all skins.
