Second, any time you want to replace any text in MediaWiki, look in the languages/Language.php file (for English) or the languages/LanguageXX.php file, where XX is the two-letter language code (LanguageDe.php is the German-language file, for example).
No. Don't do that. 99% of the content of the LanguageXX.php files is loaded into the MediaWiki: namespace when you first install, and ignored from then on. This is only not the case for the new feature that lets logged in users select a translation their own interface - if they choose something other than the site-wide default, it will then come straight from the Language file. So you should always look in [[Special:Allmessages]] and edit the appropriate wiki page. Or am I missing something here?
Come to think, unless I *am* missing something, this is kind of awkward with respect to important things like license notes, but maybe there's a different way of editting those that takes effect in all languages (one of those cryptic $1 substitutions in the mesage, for instance). If not, maybe there should be.
