MediaWiki is written in PHP. It expects its extensions to be php. Thus,
not too well :)
You could directly access the db from java, or serve some resources from
java, or even use them at an extension proxying with a little of php.
But using PHP would be much easier.

Well, I'd imagine some PHP wrapper around Java code should be an
option. For instance, stuff like this:
