The latter is the easier option and involves a quick patch to
OutputPage.php. Find the addCategoryLinks function, circa line 220 and
look for the line
$this->mCategoryLinks[] = $sk->makeLinkObj( $title, $text );
Replace this with
$this->mCategoryLinks[] = $sk->makeKnownLinkObj( $title, $text );
