cleaning out a mass of unwanted users

Hello everyone, I was careless enough to run a MediaWiki installation allowing people to sign up without a moderator's approval. Hence a few hundred of them did sign up and started to use the site to swap images. How can I delete their accounts in the most expeditious way? Thanks. Boris.

Characters displaying incorrectly

Hello: When searching for the word cliché in my wiki, the search results return pages that have the word in it but it looks like clichÃ© instead of cliché. This is happening with other words and phrases that use characters like: single quotation mark, double quotation mark, apostrophe, en dash, em dash, accent acute, accent grave, tilde, umlaut, etc. What is the best way to fix this? I'm running: MediaWiki: 1.10.2 (r356) PHP: 5.2.17 (cgi) MySQL: 5.0.90-log Thanks, Patricia Barden

site mirror and master-slave question

I'm trying to find some further documentation or guidance (if any) on site duplication and then master-slave replication. The scenario is this: We have 2 Wiki's, each in their own network. The first wiki is available to our users now. The second one is a clone of the first which was made a couple of months ago and hasn't been touched since. What I'd like to do is have the clone be the slave and the first one be the master. I'm thinking that the database would not contain the extensions, skins, possibly photos, templates ? So I would have to push those over. The clone or slave would only be for reading and not writing. Can anyone give any guidance ? thanks, Chris

Dirty hack for MW-1.19.1 (fix upload images on some hosters)

Hi, mr. All! When i installed MW-1.19.1 on my hosting i got error messages like 'rename() [function.rename <http://fwiki.whitefossa.ru/index.php/function.rename>]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 55398 is not allowed to access /var/tmp owned by uid 0 in */home/u48601/whitefossaru/fwiki/includes/upload/UploadStash.php* on line *173*' when trying to upload any image. Safe mode was turned OFF, but this error didn't disappear. Investigations, made by me and Sir. Sheti <sheti(a)furtails.ru> revealed, that my hoster is completely moron. He uses one tempdir /var/tmp for all users of server, and, this directory belongs to root:root. Because it any modification in this directory fails. And, hoster don't allow to change this directory. So, here is dirty workaround by Sheti: 1) Create temp directory in filesystem, accessible by you, than chmod -R 777 it 2) Locate file <mediawiki_dir>/includes/GlobalFunctions.php 3) Find function named 'wfTempDir()' and comment it (this function determines temp directory): //Hoster are idiot, we must make temp yourself /* function wfTempDir() { foreach( array( 'TMPDIR', 'TMP', 'TEMP' ) as $var ) { $tmp = getenv( $var ); if( $tmp && file_exists( $tmp ) && is_dir( $tmp ) && is_writable( $tmp ) ) { return $tmp; } } if( function_exists( 'sys_get_temp_dir' ) ) { return sys_get_temp_dir(); } # Usual defaults return wfIsWindows() ? If any visitor of you r page should be able to view the content of the MediaWiki page, it shouldn't require that you are logged in.

MWSeach and Lucene

I have a small Mediawiki (around 6000 pages) and currently using MWSearch(recent) and Lucene (2.1) and have a problem with Lucene where I get "java.io.FileNotFoundException:.../segments_u (No such file or directory)"; I have created a scripted solution around this but its slightly inefficient to rebuild my indexes THAT often as this happens 3-6 times a day. It seems a few people have posted about this issue on the Discussion portion of the Lucene page but no traction, is this issue just rare and caused by some incorrect configuration on my part? or do other wiki's have this issue as well? I am guessing the main Wikipedia is using the 2.1 branch of Lucene as it has "Did you mean" functionality which appears to be only apart of the 2.1 tree, and if this is true how do they deal with it? I am using mediawiki and smw and a few plugins...I have the wiki data loaded and am searching for ways to get more big data into my wiki - I am thinking about yagos2 or some of the other datasets but am a bit perplexed as to what the best course of action is - any suggestions or hints will be much appreciated. maybe i should just try somee more of the standard plugins/extensions. ultimately i would like to implement some targeted ads to go with the content. what is the best combo of data and extensions in your opinions? Image problems in Safari

Hi, after upgrading my mediawiki to version 1.19.1 strange things have been happening, and it seems to be a memory problem or something. Using Safari on MAC as web browser, the webpage can work fine for some time, then suddenly images aren't loading on a page. I just get the blue boxes with a questionmark inside. So far I have found two ways of getting the images to show. One is by clicking on an image to see the full version. It then shows up, and when I hit the back button, all the other photos on the page that were missing shows up as well. The second solution is to quit Safari. If I opens it again on the same page, the images loads fine. Refreshing the page does not help. In Google Chrome or Firefox, these problems never happens. An example page that doesn't work can be seen here: http://www.kustomrama.com/index.php?title=California Another similar problem in Safari happens often if I use the search box. A search will often only result in a white page. Do anyone know what these errors might come of?? As the page is an established site it is important for me to have these problems fixed.
