Hello,
i was linked from irc.freenode.org #mediawiki to that list, as
alternative source.
My Problem is:
--------------
* I am unable to upload files > 3000 KB to my wikis (small farm).
Smaller uploads are working as supposed
Informations about the setup:
-----------------------------
* Server-OS:
** Debian Etch
* Wiki-Version:
** mediawiki1.7 (installed via apt)
* Wiki-Changes:
** $wgUploadSizeWarning = 4000 * 1024;
** $wgMaxUploadSize = 1024*1024*100;
* PHP-Changes:
** post_max_size = 16M
** upload_max_filesize = 16M
** memory_limit = 128M
If i try to upload a file > 3000 KB to my wiki it results in the
following error-message:
>> Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 20971520 bytes exhausted (tried
>> to allocate 7168001 bytes) in
>> /usr/share/mediawiki1.7/includes/Sanitizer.php on line 928
The server itself is not that powerful, but according to munin the CPU
has nothing to do. Maybe it could need more RAM, but according to free
the defined swap partition is unused, so i cant imagine that amount of
RAM is really the problem.
So if you have any idea regarding that problem, feel free to help me
out. Thanks for reading that post :D
Best regards
fidel

I seem to remember there being a simple way to move the sidebar to the
right side of the page, but I can't remember. If someone knows how to
set that for the default, please let me know. Thanks.

I created an article name as with a series of back-slashes "\\" in it as I wanted the share name to be a part of the title.
Now that I am clicking on the link for the page i get a page cannot be found error.
In IE status bar i can see that each backslash in the link has been reformated as "%5C". I have tried copying this link and reformatting "%5C" to "\" but that does not work either.
Is there any way that I can rescue the data from this page?
Many thanks
Mike Lane

I transferred a wiki from Windows XP to SuSe Linux and now I am facing some
unexpected trouble.
First I could not alter the description pages of images above a certain size
(> 1.5M) on LInux.
Later on I found that I could overcome that problem by setting the maximum
image size for description pages to maximum but later on I ran into the next
problem.
Moreover pages with a lot of images could only be displayed after setting
thumb nail size to 180 px in my references.
Every time the error lock came up with
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of XXX bytes exhausted
After setting the memory_limit in php.ini to 20M from 8M I thought the
problem gone but that was wrong.
When I try to display images with <gallery> or <sgallery> the error is back.
The funny thing is that this kind of error never appeared in the windows
environment.
It is even worse: In the windows environment my reference settings for
maximum size of description pages is 800x600 and I can set thumb nail size
to any size I like without causing problems. And the best is: memory_limit
is set to 8M.
Is there anything else that could cause that kind of trouble (apache
settings?).
I really appreciate your ideas.
Best regards
Albert Cremer

Subject: [Wikitech-l] listing usage of media files across a wiki farm
To: wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi there,
we use a little MW farm with a wiki-commons for common media files like WP.
We noticed that at the file description articles in wiki-commons there
is a automatically generated list of articles where the file is used.
There are only articles from wiki-commons itself.
We would very appreciate to include all articles from our farm.
Any suggestions for configuration or changes?
THX!
BTW:
All wikis reside on the same server but in different databases.
Necessary database user accounts and passwords are known, of course.

My small NGO is looking for a few hours of MediaWiki customization. We
promote democracy in local communities around the world.
We host at SiteGround and are looking for assistance with our chosen skin,
anti-spam extensions, and a handful of content related extensions.
If you are interested, let us know your hourly rate, mention some sites
(with links if public) and extensions you've had experience with/recommend.
In return we will send a detailed list of what we need done (from setting up
the wiki to run from a sub-domain to installing/tweaking some extension) so
you can share an estimate of the hours required and the total project cost.
We also will ask for a yearly price to keep our mediawiki version up-to-date
with stable releases.
Ideally, this small project will lead to an ongoing relationship with our
wiki efforts.

I've set up Lucene following the instructions on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Installing_lucene_search When I get to the
indexing stage, I get this error:
Unhandled Exception: java.io.IOException: no root element: U+58
at org.mediawiki.importer.XmlDumpReader.readDump () [0x00000]
at MediaWiki.Search.SearchTool.SearchTool.ImportDump (System.Stringdumpfile,
System.String database) [0x00000]
at MediaWiki.Search.SearchTool.SearchTool.Main (System.String[] args)
[0x00000]
My friend has also set up Lucene on his machine, and he gets the same
error. We're both at a loss about what the problem is.
I want to have a namespace which has an ampersand in it e.g. "Me&You". I've followed the directions for $wgExtraNamespaces which ask to use $amp; for &, and everything goes okay except - a new page doesnt get recorded in the new namespace, when I check the database, so defeating the purpose (it gets a namespace of 0, the main space).
I can get this to work if I use just the & as it is, but the main "article" tab comes messed up. It shows this:
"<nstab-Me&You>"
instead of "article"
I can get rid of the ampersand and gain 2 more letters to make the namespace a little longer but I want the ampersand if possible. I've tried different combinations for other unicode characters too on a test wiki with the same result. I guess there's no current fix for this, right and I'd probably have to get rid of the ampersand? If you want to try it yourself, try:
$wgExtraNamespaces = array(120 => "Me1&You", 121=> "Me1&You_Talk", 122 => "Me2&You", 123=> "Me2&You_Talk" );
And then add an article in each namespace and check the database, or the Special:Allpages which will show only one namespace's article, and thats the one for which the "article" tab is messed during display.
thanks
Eric
