Hi,
Is it possibe to add users into the database automatically without going
through the normal registration process? I looked at 'mw_user' table
which has some mandatory fields beyond user name,pwd and wanted to know
how to generate those, if our aim is to load users information through
a csv or sql file.
Thanks

I have set the php.ini to have the extension mysql.dd, infact i have enabled
all the extensions with respect to database that i can find in the file.
Also i have set the extension to point to ext dir of php, still it gives me
same error.
Im using php 5.1.6 and tried both 5.0.24 and 4.1 of Mysql, both gives same
error.
I have two wikis, one using an earlier 1.6 version of MW (1.6.2 or .3 I
think) and the second using 1.6.9. Both are fully functional. However,
"dumpBackup.php --current" works for the first wiki, but not for the
second; the error is
"(Can't contact the database server: Unknown error)".
Both wikis reside in the same directory, and are accessed by the same
root url: "www.mysite.com/newer/..." will access the newer wiki,
while "www.mysite.com/..." will access the older wiki. This is
controlled by an index.php redirect in the parent directory of the two
wiki directories:
global 'index.php' file:
----------------------
<?php
header( 'Location: http://www.mysite.com/older' ) ;
?>
---------------------
where 'older' is the directory containing the older wiki, the one for
which dumpBackup works. Note that I don't know much PHP myself, I'm
assuming this is where the redirect takes place.
Aside from that, both wikis are configured pretty identically. They use
different databases, but access those databases through the same db user
and db password, and that user has identical permissions on both
databases. Some of the settings in LocalSettings.php controlling which
users/types of users can do on the wikis differ between the two wikis,
but I wouldn't imagine this should affect the database access.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing this would be greatly
appreciated. We'd like to get dumpBackup working as soon as possible to
do a database move.
Thanks,
Ken
Hello I am trying to install mediawiki but I am having some difficulties
getting it to work in French.
When I install mediawiki choosing language "en" everything works fine,
no errors etc...
However when I install it in French I get errors when I try to change my
preferences or any other option, and I also get errors on any page that
contains an accent in the title.
For example when you install mediawiki in French there is a default page
called Actualités.
when you click on the link it shows this :
http://www.site.com/wiki2/index.php/Actualit%C3%A9s
with the following errors :
*Warning*: UtfNormal::loadData() [function.loadData ]: open_basedir
restriction in effect. File(/UtfNormalData.inc) is not within the
allowed path(s): (/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs:/tmp) in
*/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php*
on line *229*
*Warning*: UtfNormal::loadData(UtfNormalData.inc) [function.loadData ]:
failed to open stream: Operation not permitted in
*/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php*
on line *229*
*Fatal error*: UtfNormal::loadData() [function.require]: Failed opening
required 'UtfNormalData.inc'
(include_path='/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2:/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2/includes:/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2/languages:.:')
in
*/home/httpd/vhosts/site.com/httpdocs/wiki2/includes/normal/UtfNormal.php*
on line *229
*However if I replace the "e with an accent" by an "e without an accent"
like this :
http://www.site.com/wiki2/index.php/Actualites
I do not get an error...
I've got a feeling that it is something to do with my PHP setup, but
being on a mutualised server I do not have access to this, maybe
something to do with utf8 ?
What do you suggest I should do? How can I get my wiki working in French?
Thanks in advance !
Richard
hello
I noticed that in the English version of wikipedia it is possible to do
boolean searches, but in the German one it is disabled, as it is in the
mediaWiki I just installed for myself. I did some research about this,
but everyone seems to be telling something different than the other guy.
Do you know how to enable boolean searches in mediaWiki? (maybe using
the AND, NOT, OR syntax or the one with the plus, minus and tilde signs
from mySQL)?
thank you
Stef

Hello,
I have a fresh installation 1.9.2.
I created a new page with some text in it:
http://beadsoft.net/wtest/index.php?title=Textloss&oldid=42
between the <pre>-tags I do have HTML-coding.
When I use the edit-function on a later section AND insert a new heading
of the same level, the text of the whole article will be corrupted.
I had
* loosing text after the new section
* doubling of sections
* complete corruption
You are invited to play in my testwiki, see link above.
regards,
Gunter

Hello all,
A few weeks ago, I came across the Organic Design wiki*. In their
left-hand side menu, they have a concise version of the RecentChanges list.
I'd love to have that as well, but I don't really know how to go about
it (they use Flash, which I'd rather avoid).
Does anyone happen to know a simple way to implement something like this?
Thanks,
Frederik

After hours of reading, trying, failing, re-reading, trying, and
failing I'm asking for help.
It all started when I wanted to do a seemingly simple thing: use mdash
(and occasionally ndash) instead of hyphens. IMO, typing "—" to
insert a frequently used single character is very awkward and ugly, so
when I found a discussion about MediaWiki automatically converting "--"
to an mdash I thought my problem was solved. Alas, as far as I can
determine that feature was experimentally enabled very briefly and
quickly disabled because it breaks table syntax. If my understanding of
this is wrong, please let me know because typing "--" (or "---" to be
compatible with TeX [1]) to represent mdash is a winner, IMO.
I eventually discovered Edittools, but I cannot make it work. I've
created a page:
http://www.flightedbirds.org/fbwiki/index.php/Monobook.css
that appears as it should. I've installed Charinsert:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CharInsert
Brian, you've got a cool tool there (no pun intended), but lots of
people are not going to realize that your line:
require_once("$IP/extensions/CharInsert/CharInsert.php");
addition to the LocalSettings.php also requires them to create a
CharInsert directory under the extensions directory, and to copy the
CharInsert.php file there. Yes, it's blindingly obvious to you, but it
isn't to lots of people. I see this scenario over-and-over again, where
authors post directions that seem obvious to them, but they are not to
most people, and the result is a huge number of posts that could have
been avoided by the original author not assuming everyone is not
up-to-speed and taking a little extra time to explain step-by-step what
needs to be done.
Bottom line: I'm stuck. I've installed everything needed to get the
enhanced edit options, yet they don't appear when I edit a page.
Another issue: I'm the site admin. If I can't make the enhanced editing
work, what chance does the typical user have to make it work? IMHO, the
wiki admin should have the option of enabling it for everyone.
[1] Donald Knuth (the creator of TeX) is a giant. MediaWikia developers
would be wise to follow his lead in using "--" to represent ndash and
"---" to represent mdash.

When all else fails, try Tequila...
Dear list,
is there a standard css class in mediawiki (Monobook or elsewhere) which
is normally displayed on a screen but hidden when printed?
I have pages which include a custom navigation menu (taken from a
template). When printed, this navigation menu should not be seen.
My idea was to enclose the template page with <div> tags using a class
which is not displayed when the output media is "print".
Any other solution or workaround is also appreciated.
Regards, Nino
