I'm planning on doing a overview of the various Wiki Hosts which use
MediaWiki. Basically grouping types together, and pointing out
differences between the services (Scope, MediaWiki version and support,
what kind of extensions and services they provide).
The overview would probably be considered OR so since it's a MediaWiki
overview MediaWiki.org would probably be the best place for it.
I've grabbed a quick list from Wikipedia and memory, but if anyone knows
of another MediaWiki Host it would be helpful if they would post up a link.
Here's what I got so far:
* Wikimedia
* Wikia
* ScribbleWiki
* BluWiki
* editthis.info
* Gratis-Wiki.com
* Wiki-Site.com
* wiki-wiki.ru

How does one insert an image link that shows the link text instead of
the image?
E.g., Entering something like [[Image:something.jpg|Something]] on a
wiki page would render as:
Entering something like _Something_ on a wiki page....

Hi all,
we are delighted to announce that the first stable version of Semantic
MediaWiki, SMW 1.0, has been completed in 2007 and is now available for
download [1].
The online documentation will be updated accordingly within the next weeks.
== New features at a glance ==
* Simplified semantic annotations: just one kind of annotation ("Property").
* Significant speedups for page rendering and loading
* Prettier and easier to understand interfaces
* Alternative inline query syntax {{#ask:...}}, fully compatible with
MediaWiki templates, template parameters, and other extensions
* Semantic RSS feeds: subscribe to your favourite query results
* More expressive semantic querying: class and property hierarchies, equality
* Pattern matching, disjunctions, and inequality in query conditions
* Fewer and simpler datatypes, more tolerant parsing
* Better media support: better treatment of links to Image: and Media:
* Better internationalisation, new languages: Dutch, Chinese
* Experimental n-ary properties for list-like property values
* Ontology import re-enabled (simple annotation import)
* Support for upcoming MediaWiki 1.12
* Many many bugfixes and improvements
The complete list of changes is found at [2].
== How to install/upgrade ==
SMW 1.0 requires MediaWiki of version 1.11 or greater (though 1.10 still work
for the most part). Existing installations can easily be upgraded, and
existing syntax will mostly continue to work as expected. Details on upgrade
and installation are found in the INSTALL instructions [3].
Any problems can be discussed on our user mailing list "semediawiki-user".
== Acknowledgements ==
This release represents a major step in SMW development, and would not have
been possible without a number of contributors, translators, and, of course,
users, who have greatly aided the development of SMW [4]. In addition,
specific development tasks have been supported by the European Union within
projects SEKT and NeOn, and by Vulcan Inc. and ontoprise GmbH within the Halo
project. Thanks!
Finally, given that none of us accepts any donations, I would like to point
out that the development of SMW hinges upon the established communities and
experiences of the open content and free software movement. SMW would not
have been possible without the continued activities from organisations such
as the Wikimedia Foundation (obviously), but also the Free Software
Foundation or Creative Commons (providing us developers with some legal
safety). If you want to support SMW, please support those or similar
organisations.
So have fun with the new release, and all the best for the new year!
Markus

Hello all!
On my Special:Version page I notice this text: "MediaWiki is free software;
you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General
Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version
2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version."
1) Does this mean that my wiki has to have the GNU free documenation license
on all of its pages?
2) Am I not allowed to make money with content on my site, in terms of
putting up google adsense advertisements? (It feels like I can since I've
seen others make extensions to do this...)
3) Am I not allowed to make money with content on my site, in terms of
reprinting it on physical paper and selling copies, for example? If I don't
have to use the GNU license, I could reasonably have a policy where all or
some content users submit becomes my property, right?
Thanks.
Hello,
For a project I've been working on we have been developing a variety
of new extensions, in particular several new magic words.
Unfourtuantley we have been having problems with getting them to work
with one another.
When the extensions are used on their own (i.e. the require_once for
all but one commented out) it works fine, but, when more than one is
installed simultaneously, none work.
I've tried various ways but I cannot see any error. The source code
for one of my extensions can be found here
<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TotalRevisions#Source_Code> -
the others have not yet been published, although they all identical
system (just a difference in what they output). Can anyone see why
these don't work when installed together.
Thank you in advanced.

Hello,
Due to parser tags not being able to correctly handle variables such
as {{{1}}} I created my own custom parser function that calls a parser
tag I've installed so that I could use such variables with it.
Unfortunately instead of outputting the actual image that it should do
it outputs the code raw - I've verified this is something to do with
the parser as I have done some testing and can confirm that before it
is return-ed it is still HTML code, not escaped HTML code. Below is a
copy of my custom code for anyone who is interested in helping. Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.
<?php
/* Parser Function style work around, calls above function. */
$wgExtensionFunctions[] = 'wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Setup';
$wgHooks['LanguageGetMagic'][] = 'wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Magic';
function wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Setup() {
global $wgParser;
$wgParser->setFunctionHook( 'link',
'wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Render' );
}
function wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Magic( &$magicWords, $langCode ) {
$magicWords[ 'link' ] = array( 0, 'link' );
return true;
}
function wfImageLinkWorkAroundParserFunction_Render( &$parser, $target
= '', $alt = "", $src = "", $height = "", $width = "" ) {
$img = new LinkedImage;
$img->wikipage = $target;
$img->tooltip = $alt;
$img->img_src = $src;
$img->img_alt = $alt;
$img->img_height = $height;
$img->img_width = $width;
$img->img_border = 0;
#echo $img->render(); # Outputs actual HTML (e.g. <img src="foo" />)
return $img->render(); #' Outputs escaped HTML (e.g. <img src="foo" />)
}
?>

You can change sidebar font size by adding definition of individual parts of sidebar (e.g. div#p-navigation 'brace' font-size: 12px; 'brace') -MGrabovsky
