I changed the imagetags from this one:
[[Image:imagename.jpg|200px|imagenamewith comment]]
to this one:
[[Image:imagename.jpg|200px]]
and the images now are displayed
(maybe a beginners error)

Thank you Brion, you pointed me in right direction & I solved the problem.
The session save folder was not writable by apache.
For the benefit of others ...
Info on php sessions: http://ca3.php.net/session
1) I verified that cookies worked on my client system.
2) On the server, I found out that no session files were being created in
the folder pointed to by the "session.save_path" php variable. This is
usually a permissions problem.
3) I tested this by making the session folder world writable. My sessions
now work properly.
4) I determined the apache "user" & set up the permissions properly to
avoid security problems.

The file "patch-ss_images.sql" is wrong.
The wrong file:
ALTER TABLE /*$wgDBprefix*/site_stats ADD ss_images int(10) default '0';
SELECT @images := COUNT(*) FROM /*$wgDBprefix*/image;
UPDATE site_stats SET ss_images=@images;
The is correct:
ALTER TABLE /*$wgDBprefix*/site_stats ADD ss_images int(10) default '0';
SELECT @images := COUNT(*) FROM /*$wgDBprefix*/image;
UPDATE /*$wgDBprefix*/site_stats SET ss_images=@images;

Before I release a formal 1.6.0, I'd like if a few people would quickly test
installation of the current snapshot.
Generally 1.6 is working quite nice on our own servers, but the installation and
updater code might not be as well exercised. I've done a few basic smoke tests
on my own, but a few more under different conditions might be wise before we
make a fuss about The Big Release.
Download:
http://svn.wikimedia.org/snapshots/mediawiki-snapshot-20060404.tar.gz
MD5 checksum: 352de479b8eada133de1247badd3677a
Release notes (not finalized):
http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/RELEASE-NOTES
As a reminder, we're planning to start on a quarterly snapshot release schedule;
about every three months we'll take what's currently running, branch it off and
release it. Security updates will continue to be made on those release branches
for some time, but feature development and non-essential bugfixes generally will
go on the mainline and be available in the next quarterly release.
So 1.7 is tentatively scheduled for July; 1.8 for October, 1.9 (?) for January, etc.

Hi there,
I'm not sure if this is a bit too naive, and wether its a FAQ or a
completely new stupid question.
I would like to setup a wiki on my notebook for my study and research
notes and book excerpts. Puzzling around with hundreds of text files is
quite unsatisfactory. Besides, having used wikipedia online for a while
my way of thinking started to be wikified ;-)
Currently I work with didiwiki, but this has a poor search algorithm
that's even case sensitive, it doesn't support formula etc.
I would like to have mediawiki on localhost, accessing it from
localhost, and don't allow anybody else in the network to use it (guess
a firewall is enough?).
I read the installation procedure, but it appears it is more for people
having some network background.
I've installed the php packages etc. via apt-get (I'm using Ubuntu 5.10
Breezy, with Gnome), but I don't get that thing to work.
I'd very much appreciate some "mediawiki for idiots" instructions about
how to make my personal wiki run.
Best regards,
John
P.S.: I wouldn't need a complete page history. saving just the last 2-3
edits would be enough.

I'm sorry if this is an obvious question, but how to access this feed?
Thanks!

Hi, I'd like to receive notification when a new page is created.
There is a faq about that here

erytime_a_new_article_is_created.2C_users_get_email_notification.3F
but nobody answered yet. Is there any way to do that?
Thank you very much for your help

Hi,
A Newbie here. I Just installed mediawiki.1.5.7 on a redhat enterprise
workstation.
As an anonymous user, I can create new pages, edit & save articles just
fine. If I log in as a user or even as WikiSysop, I don't seem to be able to
write back to the database. The SAVE button in the edit window is treated
like a PREVIEW, I cannot change prefences. As WikiSysop I cannot delete
pages.
Any suggestions? Regards, Peter.
