The section edit links' behavior will change in MediaWiki 1.22 (not yet released), and that's what MediaWiki.org is running.
You would have to use the git master version, or try applying the patches that changed this on top of 1.20. I'm not sure if that would be possible, though, and would certainly be a little ugly; I can find appropriate commits for you if you want to try anyway.
