I don't have access to mediawiki server configuration... is there a way to see it from the special pages? I think the server is using ImageMagick, but I'm not sure.

What are you using for resizing? libgd? ImageMagick? $wgUseImageResize is set to true? Have you looked at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Image_thumbnailing#Image_thumbnailing?
