What am I missing here? I have not touched any interwiki settings in
LocalSettings.php.

Make sure that your LocalSettings.php has the line:
$wgLocalInterwiki = $wgSitename;
Beyond that, have you looked at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Interwiki_linking?
