Hmmm. Did you place this near the end of the LocalSettings.php file? Did you clear your browser cache or refresh the page?
I am assuming your $wgGroupPermissions['*']['read'] set to "false"?

I am trying to lock down my wiki site, but when I set $wgGroupPermissions['*']['createaccount'] = false; I can't even get to
the login page. It says I must login to access that page (catch-22). I
am using MediaWiki version 1.7.1.
