I don't see any problems with WYSIWYG editors, nor did I say there's anything
wrong with learning how to use one, but rather expecting someone else to learn anything is
silly.
I'm not a programmer, but since this is open source I bet it wouldn't be too hard
for someone to write an offline app that could post to a wiki. I have widgets that display
information. Shouldn't be too hard to go the other way.
And I wasn't expecting people to learn the markup either. I've been consistently
stating it's not required to contribute.
Personally, to me, it sounds like you want a Dreamweaver site with Contribute. Or a CMS.
There's nothing wrong with the idea of a front end to a wiki, any more than
there's something wrong with people creating webpages and not knowing html. But with a
wiki, it's not really required.

I can't believe that you're saying it's silly to "learn" a WYSIWYG
editor while at the same time implying that wiki markup just allows
people to "throw it up there." This is precisely the argument been
made against wiki markup.
You're not seriously suggesting that, given two non-technical people,
wiki markup would be less time-consuming and intimidating than a
simple WYSIWYG editor?
What is it about a simple WYSIWYG editor that wouldn't allow people
to just "throw it up there"? Surely it's easier to throw it up there
"as it is" rather than having to go through a interim language on the
wayy? I can't believe I even have to ask this question, it just seems
to plain obvious.
