If you're running PHP in 'safe mode' then this will not work -- PHP will
only be able to write in directories *owned by* the user that owns the
script.
If you make the 'images' subdirectory writable, it should automatically
attempt to fall back to using that if /tmp can't be used. You can also
create an appropriate directory elsewhere and set the TMP environment
variable.
