Hello everyone,
I'm aware that asking this question here may just cause my inbox to melt...
I recently met with the organiser of a sci-fi film festival. As a part of the festival they have a big convention which is, I think, being held at the ExCel arena this year in London.
It's early days but we're exploring the possibility of Wikimedia UK doing something within the convention. There will be lots of writers there, and sci-fi film folk. There's lots of scope for things, such as getting photos and sound files for Commons, editing training, an editathon... there's lots of potential.
If anyone is interested in meeting with the convention / festival organiser do let me know and we'll see if we can set something up.
Thank you,
Stevie
This would be a good event to run a stall or wikilounge, perhaps with a live display of photos uploaded to Commons of the event. The English Wikipedia tends to have the topic well covered, though quality portraits are hard to get or artworks released.
I follow sf authors and so would be interested in supporting a stall & photography or helping with initial discussions.

Yes; interested in this generally, and from a voice-intro persepctive.
I've expressed my interest too off-list - this is really close to my house so it'd be lovely to attend.

We have a page for this onhttps://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Science_Fiction_Worldcon_in_London._August_14_to_18,_2014the Wikimania website, I suggest people who are interested go there and flesh that page out. The 14th to 18th August is very much part of the fringe of Wikimania and there will be some Wikimanians still in London, especially if there are SF fans coming.
The final planning of this would be an interesting topic for a 30 minute slot https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissionsat Wikimania, both for interested parties to meet each other, finalise plans for the con and perhaps for other editors to add to the wishlist of recordings images or just sit in on the planning of such an event.

Not the same conference, alas. But I will invite the festival organiser along to Wikimania. It will give him a sense of the kind of things that can be arranged.
It's good to see so much interest in this. Once I have some more details I'll invite the festival organiser in for a coffee and to meet some folks form the community with a view to getting an event page up on the wiki. If my memory serves me correctly the festival and conference are in October / November.
More to follow later.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Attending the convention in August is part of the fringe and I have added it as such, but I think that rather implies we might consider having a stall or something there?
The Film festival is so long after Wikimania that I would treat it as a WMUK event outside of Wikimania

Hi Stevie,
I'm already in discussion with somebody involved with the convention. We haven't got anything firm yet (there was going to be more conversation at the Coventry meetup on the 30th), so unless you've already made some headway, perhaps we should merge the conversations? Harry Mitchell

Thank you,
Stevie
Sounds sensible, but before we do that, let's make sure we're talking about the same event...

I'd be potentially interested in helping do something here.
With the August SciFi conference in London - I know one of the organising committee for that, and previously put them in touch with Ed/James/Saad to see if anything could be done. I'm not sure whether the page on the Wikimania wiki is related to that contact, or if it's an independent activity. If it is separate, then I'd be happy to provide another introduction here...
Thanks, Mike
I posted that page on the wikimania wiki so it is independent of your contact.
The August SciFi conference at ExCel is Loncon3 - the World Science Fiction convention. It is the weekend after Wikimania. It is very well attended by authors so would be a good place to gather voice intros and even interviews.
- It will have an exhibition hall with dealers tables, art exhibition, poster displays. Do we want a table there for our voice intro booth? - It will have a large program of panels on all kinds of stuff SF fans are interested in. Do we have a photographer interested in hanging out in the Green room taking pics of panel members? - It will have the Hugo award ceremony (If you buy membership you get to vote and you get a copy of most of the nominated works included in your membership). - It will have a multimedia stream and a music stream and a lot of hanging out in bars discussing stuff till late.
Is WMUK interested in participating? Is WMUK interested in paying for memberships for volunteers who would be willing to man a booth? Loncon3 is starting to finalise their arrangements so we need to decide what we are interested in doing.
Yours
Joe

Thanks. I'm sad to hear that my previous introduction was a waste of time then (however, I've now gotten used to my input being ignored by those organising this Wikimania...). :-( My colleague is Dave Clements, who is leading the science programme area - let me know if a new introduction here would be useful.

I suspect the best approach here would be to put in a project grant request to fund such work. I'd be happy to help draft this if that would be useful.
Thanks, Mike

Actually, I've looked at this a bit more deeply and it appears it could be the same conference after all. It sounds like lots of people already have this in hand. To avoid duplication then, I'll leave it with you and concentrate on the film festival later in the year.
