Hello everyone,
It is with some sadness that I write to let you know that I have moved on
to pastures new, and finished working for Wikimedia UK in the middle of
September. I am sorry that I didn't write sooner but have been away on a
much needed holiday.
Over the last three and a half years I have had the pleasure and privilege
to work with some incredible people, both staff and volunteers. Being able
to support the free and open knowledge movement in a professional capacity
has been exciting, tiring, empowering, stressful, and the most incredible
experience of my professional life.
Being able to make a contribution to this movement, for which I care
deeply, has been an honour. I will continue to be involved as a volunteer,
in the realms of communications, policy and advocacy.
There are too many people who have made such a positive impact on me
personally and professionally to be able to name and thank them all
individually. However, I do want to say a special thanks to my outstanding
colleagues at Wikimedia UK who are the most talented and hard working group
of people I have ever worked with. I want to also thank the volunteers and
staff I have worked with closely over the years as Head of External
Relations, especially in the areas of movement communications, campaigning,
educational & IP policy, and digital democracy.
I've been lucky enough to meet, and work with, many smart and thoughtful
people outside our movement and I hope that I've made a strong enough case
for free and open knowledge for them to remain involved in this mission.
I'd love to continue to hear from you all so do feel free to email me –
stevie.d.benton(a)gmail.com – or find me on Twitter or LinkedIn and thank you
all once again for an amazing three and a half years.
With thanks and regards,
Stevie

Dear all
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) has recommended that the Wikimedia
Foundation awards Wikimedia UK £277,300 towards our work in 2016/17. Their
comments on our proposal are here, along with the other organisations being
assessed in this round:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2…
This is around 12% less than we had requested, so we will need to look at
our plans next year in order to balance the budget, however it is still a
good result and I would like to thank Daria and the rest of the team for
all their work on the proposal this year.
Best wishes
Lucy

All,
Just FYI, WMUK's phone systems are completely down today - BT have now sent
out an engineer to the exchange to check it, but you're better off emailing
us rather than calling for today and tomorrow :-)

Hi all,
Wikimedia Ireland are currently working on writing their bylaws - see below. Although Irish law is, of course, different from UK law, I'm forwarding this in case anyone here has the time and interest to have a look through and give them some helpful suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike

All,
A Syrian Wikimedian has reportedly been sentenced to death by the Syrian
government. There's discussion of a possible banner to support him at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Banner:Free_Bassel. I encourage you to all
get involved and add your input to the banners, or share your thoughts on
the talk page about which banner would be best.

Dear all
We are working with Disability Arts Online to develop better coverage of
disabled artists and the disability arts movement on Wikipedia, and are
looking for a trainer (or preferably trainers!) who would be prepared to
deliver these sessions and are available on at least one of the following
dates:
Thursday 3 December 2015
Thursday 4 February 2016
Thursday 3 March 2016
All sessions will be 11am - 4pm and are to be held at Goldsmith's
University in London.
Participants are being recruited by DAO and will all be disabled writers,
who are keen to develop their own research and editing skills as well to
improve Wikipedia coverage of disabled artists and the disability arts
movement. The idea is that it will be the same cohort of writers who
attends all three sessions but of course there may be some drop off, and
some additional participants at later sessions. As DAO has had a very high
level of interest in the sessions from their community, we are ideally
looking for two trainers for each session, but the urgent priority is to
find at least one volunteer for the session in December. There will be an
appropriate level of support from DAO including British Sign Language
interpreters, and experts on the disability arts movement, so trainers
don't need to be knowledgable about this field.
Richard Nevill is going to be working on this project so please let he and
I know if you are potentially interested/available. Volunteer expenses will
be covered.
Many thanks
Lucy
