Hello,
I’ve newly returned from the annual Wikimania conference in Italy only to find the UK has decided to leave the European Union.
Whatever your views of Brexit, the sharing of Open Knowledge globally remains an important area of cross-border collaboration and it was great to see that working so successfully & positively for the last few days.
With that in mind, and to keep the momentum going, we have two Wiki Social meets lined up for July; one in Edinburgh on the evening of Thursday 14th July and one in Glasgow on the afternoon of Saturday 16th July.
* Have you been editing Wikipedia for some time? Do you have ideas of how you’d like to see the Wikimedia movement progress in Scotland?
* Have you just begun? Do you feel confident in editing Wikipedia? How can we help you progress?
* Have you never edited Wikipedia before but would be interested in taking your first steps in learning how? Are you aware of Wikipedia’s new Visual Editor interface which makes editing as easy as using MS Word or Wordpress blogging?
* If you have attended one of our training sessions / edit-a-thons, have you continued to edit Wikipedia since that time? Again, how can we help you progress?
* Are you interested in training others? Or in including assignments within courses?
* Are you interested in learning more and chatting informally with like-minded individuals?
These meetups are informal gatherings with no formal agenda, but please feel free to add any topics that you'd like to raise for discussion on the event pages.
1. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Glasgow/8
2. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh/11
About the meetups
The meetups are intended to include any interested Wikimedians who find themselves in Edinburgh or can make their way to Edinburgh on the day. Anyone who has attended previous meetups in Glasgow or Edinburgh are encouraged to return to meet new faces! It will be a social gathering for Wikimedia enthusiasts, where we...
* Have a bite to eat and a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic!).
* Chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy!
* Explore how we can encourage others to engage with Wikipedia and arrangements for future Wiki meetups.
This is mainly a casual social event. You can expect to meet some keen Wikipedians, however this is also an open invitation to anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, projects re-using Wikipedia, and other collaborative wiki projects. Feel free to come along and raise these discussions!

Hello WMUK people,
What's the rundown of the AGM? I think I've seen one somewhere but can't
find it anymore... I'll be travelling by public transport so it'll be
useful to be able to plan ahead for the arrival time in Birmingham and
departure time from Birmingham.
Deryck
As you may have seen in the media, or on social media, today, Heritage
England, who maintain the country's list of, er, listed buildings,
have launched a crowd-souring initiative, asking people to provide
information and images about listed buildings.
It's a horribly missed opportunity - it seems no thought has been
given to collaborating with the Wikimedia movement, who have been
colleclting such pictures on Commons (not least as "Wiki Loves
Monuments") and writing about the buildings for over a decade, on
Wikipedia.
Nor are people submitting images asked to put them under open licence.
They claim their terms, at:
http://historicengland.org.uk/terms/website-terms-conditions/enriching-the-…
allow the images to be used on Wikipedia, but that's not so.
I'm in contact with them, and am hoping to have a phone chat with the
project manager later today. I'll keep you informed.

Hello all,
I wanted to make people aware of some of the partnerships we are
developing, and wanted to know of any volunteers that might be interested
in working on these, either training at events or looking at the potential
for content releases.
*Palestine Exploration Fund* - Fantastic collection, interested in doing
some training for their members, yet to be scheduled.
*Tate Britain* - Looking for a trainer for an event on 22nd of May covering
Queer British Art.
*Amnesty Internationa*l - Approached about potential editathon in June, to
expand articles on Human Rights.
*Cancer Research UK - *We successfully ran some training for some PhD
students in Cardiff recently, but they would like to continue training for
their researchers at venues around the country. Such as Manchester and
Edinburgh.
*British Heart Foundation - *Are interested in getting some training for
their staff.
If any of the above is of interest, let me know.
Best
Stuart

Hello everyone,
Last Sunday we had the 107th London meetup with about twenty people
including Alice, our new Wikimedian in Residence at the Wellcome Trust
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Zeromonk>.
As well as the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons we had editors
active in Wikisource, Wikidata and the French Wikipedia.
Conversation ranged from meta matters like inclusionism and Wikimania to
how we can make better use of the 100,000 Wellcome images that Fae uploaded
to Commons. We also discussed beer, a photography contest and the reasons
why certain articles made the list of most read Wikipedia articles. Oh and
Rich gave me an impromptu lesson on AWB.
Next month's meeting is, as always, on the second Sunday of the month - Sunday
July the tenth <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/108>.
Hope to see some of you there.

Dear all
As I know most of you will be aware, in the UK we have the legal right to
take photos of public art and buildings and share or publish them in print,
on social media, photo sharing websites, Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
This right, known as Freedom of Panorama, does not exist across Europe,
with restrictive laws existing in France, Sweden and a number of other
countries. The European Commission wants to harmonise the rules concerning
the sharing of these pictures across the European Union, and is consulting
on this until 15th June.
Wikimedia UK believes that the EU should replace the current inconsistent
set of laws with Europe-wide legislation allowing people to share images of
public art, buildings and skylines for all purposes. This includes
commercial use, which would enable people to share pictures on social media
and image sharing sites such as Facebook, Flickr or Instagram without being
in breach of copyright law. It would also enable images to be used for free
educational purposes on the Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, and
reduce the time and money currently wasted on rights clearance issues, for
example in guidebooks to works of art or architecture in countries
including France, Italy, Sweden and Belgium. Please respond to the
consultation by next Wednesday 15th June, ideally using You Can Fix
Copyright's public answering guide
<http://youcan.fixcopyright.eu/limesurvey/index.php/591338?lang=en&newtest=Y>,
and ensure that the UK’s rights are preserved, whilst supporting the
extension of Freedom of Panorama across Europe. The Commission is also
consulting on Ancillary Copyright, which Wikimedia UK believes is both
unnecessary and unfair on ordinary internet users. We would encourage you
to respond to this at the same time as the Freedom of Panorama consultation.
If you use social media, we would be grateful if you could share this
message or tweet about the consultation, using the hashtag #saveFoP
Many thanks!
