Dear all
As I think most of you are aware I have been on maternity leave since the
end of March (with my beautiful baby boy arriving on 5th April!), and Sandy
Balfour has been the interim Chief Executive during that time. I returned
to work a few weeks ago but am working part time hours (usually three days
a week) until the New Year, when I'll be back full time.
I've enjoyed my first few weeks back but am still catching up on quite a
lot of things, as I'm sure you'll appreciate. An important piece of work
over the next few months is developing our new three year strategy from 1st
February 2019 - 31st January 2022. I have done some initial work on this
following a short discussion about our future strategic focus at July's
AGM, a board away day in September, and staff discussions; however I'm keen
to ensure that this also takes account of and reflects community concerns
and priorities. With this in mind, I would like to invite interested
volunteers/editors/members to Wikimedia UK's office on *Thursday 13th
December* for a strategic planning discussion. This will be followed by
some festive drinks/nibbles with staff and board (prior to a board meeting
later that evening). The schedule will be:
4 - 5pm - strategy discussions
5 - 6pm - drinks and nibbles
6pm board meeting
I realise that some people may be interested in the chapter's future
strategy but unable to attend the meeting in person, and will be in touch
about other ways in which to contribute; however I wanted to get this date
in people's diaries asap. Please can you email
Katie.Crampton(a)wikimedia.org.uk to let her know if you will be attending
one or both elements. There is no obligation to come to the meeting at 4pm
in order to get a free drink at 5pm...but you are encouraged to do so!
All best wishes
Lucy

The next Cambridge meetup will be on 15 December:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cambridge/39
It will follow our current pattern, of a traditional meetup as social occasion, from 3 pm, in the Makespace community workshop, preceded by a two-hour ContentMine workshop. This time the workshop will be about the ScienceSource wiki at
http://sciencesource.wmflabs.org/
and its function as a place to help annotate scientific papers. Real data for that, from text-mining, is on the way. Account creation for the wiki will be opened up, at least for a period: right now, to avoid giving the spammers an early Xmas present, you need to ask me.
Anyway, please set aside time to come and join us.
Charles
Currently, both recent changes and watchlists on the WMUK Wiki are showing
0 changes, despite there being changes that should be shown - there have
been four posts to the Engine Room (where this problem was flagged up) in
the past 2 days for example.

Hi all, just a last reminder for our first Skillshare which is taking place
after work in London tomorrow evening. I hope as many people who can make
it will come, as I'd like to be able to start running these workshops
regularly. The first is on how to write a Featured Article by user:Johnbod,
and I hope that even if you're a skilled editor you will be able to get a
better understanding of how to turn good articles into FAs. Please feel
free to come and tell me ideas for other skillshares we should be running!
Here is the signup page

See you tomorrow!

Scotland's suffragettes: a St. Andrew's Day Wikipedia editathon for Vote100
1.30pm-5.30pm on Friday 30th November 2018.
Join us to celebrate the lives & contributions of the Scottish suffragettes! This free event accompanies a new hybrid exhibition at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Research Collections and is part of 2018’s celebration of one hundred years since the Representation of the People Act (1918)<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representation_of_the_People_Act_1918> came into force and women were finally given the right to vote.
With guest speaker, Rachel Hosker (Archives Manager at the University of Edinburgh), this St. Andrew's Day event in the brand new Digital Scholarship Centre is an opportunity to see archival material about Scotland's suffragettes and a chance to learn about & celebrate the role these notable women have played in the campaign for Votes for Women through writing & illustrating Wikipedia articles & timelines for others to discover all about them. Full training is provided.
Book here <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/scotlands-suffragettes-a-st-andrews-day-wiki…>
Hope to see you there.

Hello all, thanks to people who came to our Wikidata event last night, it
was really good to get people talking together about what they are doing
with Wikidata.
Our next event is on 21st November, also at the Wikimedia UK office, and
will be a skillshare with User:Johnbod teaching best practice in writing a
Featured Article
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-skillshare-writing-a-featured-a…>.
It's aimed at both established community members who can share their
expertise and newer community members who want to learn from them, so
please come along if you can make it, and consider sharing it with others
on social media if you can't.
All the best,
