Hello all,
Just a reminder that Wiki Loves Monuments is around the corner, andn
coincidently we are looking for input on volunteer equipment. (Specifically
photography and AV equipment)
Here is a list of current equipment we have:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Equipment_Loan_Procedure#Multimedia
We’d ideally strive for some kind of balance between quality and quantity,
but are not averse to a big ticket item if it will facilitate a specific
piece of work.
But ideas suggested to me by volunteers and other Wikimedians so far have
been:
More lapel microphones (to record panel events etc)
Shoulder rig
Video light box.
Filters.
Extra batteries and memory cards.
A bigger telephoto lens
A handy audio recorder
A camera drone
A selfie stick
We have a budget of £1000. If as part of the suggestions, people could also
look at prices and possible good value vendors, that would be helpful
too. Please
reply all here, or alternatively, with suggestions on the wiki.
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:Equipment_Loan_Procedure> Looking to
firm up decisions over the next couple of weeks.
Thanks

Hello all, I've been thinking about how WMUK can communicate better with
our community and let Wikimedians communicate with each other. I've heard
from some community members that they were a little disappointed that
people were no longer using the Water Cooler page for discussions.
I'd like to propose some different options and ask if you have any other
suggestions about how you'd like to communicate with us and others in the
community. So I've put a poll on Twitter
<https://twitter.com/wikimediauk/status/766703544275767297> with some
options for communications channels. I couldn't put more than four options,
so I chose Facebook, the Water Cooler, Slack and the Mailing List.
I'd really appreciate if you could take the time to vote which one you'd
prefer or reply here or to the Tweet with any other suggestions for how
you'd like to communicate with us.
What I'm really keen to communicate are the opportunities for our community
to engage with us, propose projects, receive funding and other assistance
from WMUK. To this end, it would be good to have an open channel or
discussion group of some kind where we can respond to your ideas and allow
you to ask us questions about our work. We'd like to be as open as the
knowledge we promote, so please let us know your views about how we can do
that better.
Have a great weekend!

Clem Rutter and I will be helping to run this event at the British
Library on 8 October this year. The last one was great fun - we added
European bird sounds to Wikipedias in 40 different languages, and to
Wikidata and Wikispecies! This time we'll be adding Kenyan bird
sounds. Training will be available, and the event is suitable for
beginners, birders and non-birders alike. Do join us (free, but
sign-up required).

Dear all,
As a result of discussions at last Sunday's London meetup, and to take
advantage of a list created by Rich Farmbrough, I have started drafting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_United_Kingdom/photogra…
It hath a talkpage.
Hopefully we can finalise in the next three weeks and launch at the next
London Meetup https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/110
Apologies to any non Londoners who object to a London event planning
anything for the whole of the UK, but only the first draft emerged from the
meetup and things are yet changeable.

Hi all,
From recent-ish WMUK board minutes [1], it looks like WMUK has to move offices in the near future. I hope that this is being seen as an opportunity for WMUK, and the fact that the minutes indicate that other fellow-traveller organisations are being approached with regards options is very positive.
I'd like to ask: are options outside of London being considered?
Also, would WMUK be able to provide an update on the office move to this list, and perhaps ask for input on this move from list subscribers, please?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi all, I just wanted to make the mailing list aware of an editathon we are
holding at the National Liberal Club on August 24. The librarian at the NLC
has offered us the use of the great 19th century club and its library for
the day to add information about Liberal history, politicians and subjects
related to liberal political philosophy.
The club itself is an amazing historical location and it doesn't have
many photos
on Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:National_Liberal_Club_London>,
so if you are a photographer, please feel free to come along on the day and
help us create good quality photos of the interior of the club. If you'd
like to see the main areas inside the club, the dress code is smart (jacket
and tie for men - the club can provide them if you forget).
The event will be running all day from 10am until 8pm, so you are welcome
to come along at any time and learn how to edit and see the inside of this
important building. Please sign up on either of the event pages if you are
coming during the day as we will be providing lunch and would like to know
how many people to cater for.

Hello mailinglisters,
Just wanted to let you all know about our latest video about our
partnership with the Wellcome Library, which you can see here
<https://youtu.be/EAL2mM4_Mqk>.
We've also written a blogpost
<https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2016/08/access-all-areas-how-can-wikimedia-co…>
about recent developments in Open Access academic publishing and how
Wikimedians can get involved in promoting it.
We'd love to have your feedback and would be grateful if you could share
either with your networks.
