Dear Wikimedia UK mailing list,
We have been given some free off peak weekday tickets to the tank museum in
Dorset.
I have already Emailed those of our Wiki Loves Monuments participants who
opted in to further events, so apologies if this is a repeat, but if anyone
here fancies taking photographs of tanks, send me your snail mail address
and I will send you a ticket
Regards

Cambridge meetup 23 will be next month:

Please come - I promise there will be fewer talks than at Wikimania, but
the conversation will be up to the same standard.

I am presently unable to view the WMUK website because the security
certificate expired in the early hours of this morning:
wikimedia.org.uk uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate
expired on 31/08/14 00:59. The current time is 31/08/14 10:02. (Error
code: sec_error_expired_certificate)
This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Note it also means I can't get
to the bugzilla to report it there.

Ever thought of seeing your own photos on Wikipedia ?
This is your chance to take part in our annual photography competition to improve Wikipedia. The encyclopaedia is visited by 500 million people every month, and needs you to help improve its photos.
Wiki Loves Monuments UK is aimed at the UK's listed buildings and ancient monuments, and starts on Monday 1st September. The contest is supported by the Royal Photographic Society, English Heritage, and Wikimedia UK.
We've got lots of pictures of Tower Bridge and Stonehenge, but there's so much more of the country's heritage to celebrate. There are tens of thousands of eligible sites, so check out the UK competition website (http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk) and see what's nearby. As well as prizes for the best image, we have a special prize this year for the best image of a listed building on one of the 'At Risk' registers.
It doesn't matter when your photos are taken so long as they're uploaded by the end of September. If you took some stunning pictures back in April, or five years ago, you can still upload them.
To enter, you'll need to agree to release your entries under a free licence allowing them to be freely used by anyone for any purpose, including Wikipedia. You retain copyright, and can require anyone using your images to attribute them to you as photographer.
Help us show off your local history!

Hi everyone,
Fabian Tompsett has written a blog post about meeting people face-to-face
at Wikimania and the discussions resulting from it, including a very
interesting piece on the Translation taskforce of WikiProject Medicine and
making sure that with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa information on the
virus is available in indigenous languages.
Read the blog here <http://bit.ly/1lepZRY>.

Hi all,
Wikimedia UK is running another of its Train the Trainers workshop. This
will take place on the weekend of *1-2 November in Edinburgh*, and we would
particularly encourage anyone from Scotland and the north of England to
attend.
The workshop will be delivered by a professional training company and aims
to improve delegates’ abilities to deliver any training workshop. It’s
especially relevant to anybody who already runs Wikimedia-related training,
or is very interested in doing so in near future.
The workshop is a chance to:
- Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and
training skills
- Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when e.g.
delivering specific Wikipedia workshops
- Share your skills with others
- Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
term.
The course will run from 9:30 am-6:30pm on Saturday and 9am-5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.
If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
registering on this page
<https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?id=117&reset=1> but
please note that places are limited.
If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please let us know by email to volunteering(a)wikimedia.org.uk – we
will be offering more sessions in the future.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. We can also put
you in touch with past participants who will be able to share their
experiences with you.

Hi all,
This is just a quick email to let you know that I am /still/ processing
Wikimania-related expenses for volunteers and staff. It's a long process
with lots of new people I don't have details for - and I have a pile
several inches thick! On top of that, I have to help produce the Q2
financial figures, the Q2 FDC report, and the minutes for several meetings.
As such, I have had to prioritise my work so that volunteer expenses get
top priority, and I have had to prioritise certain volunteers who need the
money quickly. Some of you may know that the target for WMUK is to get
expenses paid within seven days (as long as there are no concerns) - I'm
rapidly approaching, and in some cases, passing that target. Unfortunately
this is not something that can be easily delegated to others because it's a
financial process that needs proper checks.
This has also meant that some of my other work - such as minuting - falls
behind a bit. If you need me to prioritise something specifically, please
send me an email reminding me and I will do what I can to expedite it.
In the meantime, please bear with me!

Hi Andy,
I don't know the total, and we may not have finalised things yet as we are still recruiting from people who got involved at Wikimania and are now working out how to stay involved. The two I have personally signed up were both immediately after Wikimania. I assume you are interested in the whole Wikimania related spike, not just those we collared in the barbican?
I can see that this is going to be of interest to both this list, especially the Mexico bid team, and of course the Wikimedia UK list. It would also be interesting to get feedback from earlier wikimania teams as to what worked for them.
As well as many regulars, Wikimania 2014 attracted a large and enthusiastic group of additional volunteers who we have an opportunity to try and engage with. Apparently most of them were in a particular Facebook group and we have already reached out to them there with invitations to both an Editathon and a campus ambassador training session. We will be doing more plugs there for WLM etc, any experience from previous wikimanias or indeed Facebook campaigners gratefully received.
Regards
