Hello everyone,
The Open Government Partnership is hosting its annual
summit<http://www.opengovpartnership.org/open-government-partnership-annual-summit…>
on
31 October and 1 November. This could be a good opportunity to build
networks in this area and find ways that we can demonstrate the value of
Wikimedia projects. We may be able to find ways to influence thinking
around open knowledge and how this can fit in with public policy. They have
issued a call for proposals which has a deadline of 1 September.
I wonder if this is of interest to anybody. There's a thread on this topic
on the Water Cooler of the WMUK wiki
here<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Water_cooler#Open_Government_Partnership_annua…>.
It would be great to discuss suggestions and ideas there.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Dear all,
I'd like to revive the UK GLAM committee, much like the Education committee
the GLAM committee will be an opportunity for for volunteers to get more
involved in our GLAM program. I'm hoping that committee members will
include those willing to take part in interviewing potential Wikipedians in
Residence, taking part in editathons and maybe even writing them up as
blogs.
If any of that sounds interesting then please drop me an email.

Apparently not. Chris Keating informed me by email the day after my
resignation that I would be replaced on the WCA, though there is no
requirement for representatives to be a trustee (perhaps other members
might be interested in helping the Chapter by taking on this
interesting inter-chapter role, I would be happy to talk it through as
a past Chair of the WCA and past Chair of the UK Chapter?).
Similiarly, I appear to no longer be needed on the recently formed
Audit and Risk Committee, though I have yet to be contacted as a
courtesy, and when we established that committee the intention was to
have non-trustees taking part as observers; it is currently formed of
3 trustees. I have noticed today that I appear to no longer be wanted
on the GLAM toolset Steering Group, which seems a bit odd considering
my role in establishing it, negotiating the original funding strategy
and the membership of the Steering Group should be agreed by the
Steering Group members. I have left a note for Jonathan Cardy, so
hopefully I may be contacted as a courtesy before I am replaced.

I did not know I was going to resign before the AGM. As it happens
Mike, Chris and myself had a serious discussion in Milan about the
importance of us three remaining "long-term" trustees staying in place
to help the formation of the new board.
I am on holiday right now, but when I return I'll consider an open
letter to the charity which may help the remaining trustees, and my
fellow members and non-members on this list, better understand my
point of view. For anyone interested in the meantime, I suggest you
take a look at the board meeting minutes over the past 18 months along
with the discussions I have raised openly on the Water cooler. The
serious issues I have raised with regard to our sadly reducing
openness, a lack of credible performance measures, and more particular
problems relating to the performance of our Chief Executive, are no
secret.
I plan to continue to support Wikimedia as a highly active volunteer,
and will continue my interest in transparent, open and effective
governance of the organizations that are formed to deliver our shared
vision. Hopefully this may continue to include projects within the
Wikimedia UK umbrella.
PS Special thanks to those that have emailed and messaged me with
notes of concern.

Hello everyone,
The below message was posted on Wikimedia UK's blog on Saturday. Mike Peel
has asked that I share this with you by email.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie
*Mike Peel resigns as a Trustee of Wikimedia UK*
It is with regret that Wikimedia UK announces that Mike Peel has resigned
as a trustee of the charity.
Mike’s contributions both to the charity and to the wider Wikimedia
movement are widely admired and respected. He became a Wikimedian in 2005
and was instrumental in the formation of Wikimedia UK. He has served on the
charity’s Board continuously since its inception in 2008 performing in the
roles of Chair and Secretary at various times. His contributions are far
too numerous to list here – in fact it would be easier to list those
projects he hasn’t been involved in.
Mike Peel, former trustee of Wikimedia UK, said: “Wikimedia UK has come a
long way over the past five years and I am very proud to have played my
part in its development. Wikimedia UK has faced some serious challenges
over the past year and I wish the Board the best in dealing with the
challenges of the future.”
Chris Keating, Chair of Wikimedia UK, said: “Mike is one of the people
without whom Wikimedia UK wouldn’t exist. His good sense, dedication and
hard work have been immensely important to the Board, as has his profound
belief in the Wikimedia movement’s vision and values. He has played a
particularly pivotal role in the last few years as Secretary and he will be
greatly missed.”
Jon Davies, Chief Executive of Wikimedia UK, said: “Mike’s belief in the
mission of Wikimedia UK is breathtaking – he has done every job there is to
do and completely deserves his break from the board – we look forward to
continuing to work closely with him.”
Mike is looking forward to being able to put more of his energy into
the Wikimedia
Foundation’s Funds Dissemination
Committee<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FDC_portal>,
and also returning to contributing to the Wikimedia projects. He will also
remain active as a volunteer with Wikimedia UK on projects such as our Llwybrau
Byw / Living Pathways
project<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Llwybrau_Byw_-_Living_Paths_Project_Recruitment>
.

Hi folks,
With help from a friend in the area, I've just scheduled the first ever Newcastle Wikipedia meetup for 15 September. If you can make it, please do sign up and come along. I'm hoping to attract a reasonable number of locals, but it would also be great to have a group of people who have been to meetups before to be welcoming and friendly!
Sign up: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Newcastle/1

Dear all,
Toni Sant, our Education Organiser, suggested that it might be useful for
him to have a set of trainer profiles publicly available on the WMUK wiki.
Not only would this increase the professionalism of our training
initiative, it would help increase the coordination of our efforts. I would
encourage anyone who has trained in the past, or has passed the Train the
Trainers course to create their own profile.
I've created a profile for myself: http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Deskana.
To ensure standardisation, I'd suggest using the template I used. In
particular, note that if you are an accredited trainer, using the
{{accreditation}} template in the "What I do" section will automatically
place you in an appropriate category.
Feel free to get in touch with my if you need help building your profile.
Thanks,
Dan
