Hi all,
Does anyone on the list have access to the journal ARQ: Architectural
Research Quarterly, published by Cambridge University Press?
I'm looking for an article from volume 12, issue 1 (March 2008) -
specifically https://doi.org/10.1017/S1359135508000948/ in connection with
my war memorials project.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Harry Mitchell

Hi all,
Is there anyone with a camera or decent smartphone within easy reach of
Southampton? I'd really appreciate some photos of the cenotaph in Watts
Park (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southampton_Cenotaph). I know the
weather is not good for photography but I'm not too worried about quality -
I just need a few shots from each angle to aid with writing a description.
Thanks,
Harry Mitchell

Dear all
ContentMine, the Cambridge based organisation which some of you will be
familiar with through WikiFactMine and/or their other initiatives, has
submitted an application to the Wikimedia Foundation for a new
project, *Diversitech.
*This will apply text-mining techniques to a multilingual corpus of LGBT
articles, to help improve the quality of related Wikimedia pages and
Wikidata. Wikimedia UK will be supporting the communications aspects of
this project, if the grant application is successful.
Please can you consider adding your support to the funding bid, if you
think that this is a good initiative? It's on wiki here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/ContentMine/Diversitech
Many thanks
Lucy

Hello all,
Wondering if there's anyone on the list that edits in Chemistry, that might be willing / able to offer me some advice? Am following up with a group of PhD students that I trained a while back - they've continued to edit (hurrah!) and have recently had some substantial edits reverted (aaah); I'm unfamiliar with the subject matter and would appreciate a second pair of eyes, or any pointers in terms of further guidance I could offer to them...
All the best,
Sara Thomas

Dear all
As there has been limited take up of the planned meeting tomorrow
afternoon, I've decided to postpone this until after the Christmas break.
I'll message again once a new date has been arranged - giving more notice,
and more time for the discussion.
Drinks in the office with staff and board are still happening tomorrow at
5pm. Do let Katie (copied in) know if you're coming.
Thanks and all best wishes
Lucy

Dear all
As I think most of you are aware I have been on maternity leave since the
end of March (with my beautiful baby boy arriving on 5th April!), and Sandy
Balfour has been the interim Chief Executive during that time. I returned
to work a few weeks ago but am working part time hours (usually three days
a week) until the New Year, when I'll be back full time.
I've enjoyed my first few weeks back but am still catching up on quite a
lot of things, as I'm sure you'll appreciate. An important piece of work
over the next few months is developing our new three year strategy from 1st
February 2019 - 31st January 2022. I have done some initial work on this
following a short discussion about our future strategic focus at July's
AGM, a board away day in September, and staff discussions; however I'm keen
to ensure that this also takes account of and reflects community concerns
and priorities. With this in mind, I would like to invite interested
volunteers/editors/members to Wikimedia UK's office on *Thursday 13th
December* for a strategic planning discussion. This will be followed by
some festive drinks/nibbles with staff and board (prior to a board meeting
later that evening). The schedule will be:
4 - 5pm - strategy discussions
5 - 6pm - drinks and nibbles
6pm board meeting
I realise that some people may be interested in the chapter's future
strategy but unable to attend the meeting in person, and will be in touch
about other ways in which to contribute; however I wanted to get this date
in people's diaries asap. Please can you email
Katie.Crampton(a)wikimedia.org.uk to let her know if you will be attending
one or both elements. There is no obligation to come to the meeting at 4pm
in order to get a free drink at 5pm...but you are encouraged to do so!
All best wishes
Lucy

The next Cambridge meetup will be on 15 December:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cambridge/39
It will follow our current pattern, of a traditional meetup as social occasion, from 3 pm, in the Makespace community workshop, preceded by a two-hour ContentMine workshop. This time the workshop will be about the ScienceSource wiki at
http://sciencesource.wmflabs.org/
and its function as a place to help annotate scientific papers. Real data for that, from text-mining, is on the way. Account creation for the wiki will be opened up, at least for a period: right now, to avoid giving the spammers an early Xmas present, you need to ask me.
Anyway, please set aside time to come and join us.
Charles
Hello everyone —
We at mySociety have posted a new Wikiproject proposal for a 2019 project
grant:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikidata_post-election_updat….
We need your feedback and comments on the project.
What we’ve done — and what we want to do
Wikidata now has up-to-date and consistent data on political position
holders in current national legislatures for at least 39 countries
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/mySociety/EveryPolitician/Fi…>
(and work in progress for over 60 countries), thanks to work by volunteer
community members on the Wikiproject every politician. mySociety worked as
part of this project with a Wikimedia Foundation grant in 2017-18.
There is now a real possibility for Wikidata to become the definitive
source of data about democracies worldwide — but only if that data can be
maintained sustainably. A significant risk is that elections and other
major political changes quickly render data on political position holders
and legislatures in Wikidata out-of-date.
We’re proposing a Wikidata post-election updating toolkit
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikidata_post-election_updat…>
project, which aims to ensure that data on elected representatives is
substantially correct and complete within a month following an election,
leading to improved quality and consistency of data in Wikidata over time.
We’ll work as part of the Wikidata community to create and signpost tools
and pathways that help contributors to quickly, easily and consistently
update data following an election or other political change.
How community members can get involved in the project
If you’re already active around data relevant to political position
holders, legislatures, or elections in Wikidata, we’d like your feedback
and help to test the new tools and guidance and ensure that they are
consistent with the emerging consensus around modelling these types of data.
In particular, if you live in a country or major region that has an
upcoming election, please talk to us about piloting the tools! We’d like
for you to test the project tools and guidance to update data following
your country’s election, and to give us feedback on the value and
appropriateness of the approach in your context and political system.
In general, we’re keen to encourage discussion and evaluation of Wikidata
as a source of current position holder data.
Please review our proposal
If you’re interested in this, and are active on Wiki projects, please have
a look and review our proposal here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikidata_post-election_updat…
Thanks!
