Hi all,
As you may know, the external service available to UK Wikimedians that
allowed you to have the WMUK Calendar [1] automatically synced to your
Google Calendar/iCalendar/Firebird/Outlook (etc) has stopped working.
I've knocked up a quick replacement; just add
http://tools.wmflabs.org/wmukevents/ as an external calendar.
Unfortunately I don't know what functionality users' used to get, so I
would be interested to know what's missing or what improvements I
could make (if easy!). (Techies on this list, if you want to help
maintain the code and have a Toollabs account, do private message me.)
If no-one objects, I'll go ahead and replace the link on [1].
By the way, if you don't already sync the WMUK calendar, I think it's
a great idea :)
Best,
Harry

Actually, it's the Scotland 2000 tartan. The middle strip of the tartan
pattern looks remarkably similar to the Wikidata logo.

Highland dress made from this tartan should be the official uniform of
Wikimedia Scotland (or even Wikimedia UK!)

All,
I should let you know that the UK chapter will be moving offices (in the
same building) tomorrow, as well as lots of staff being at a conference, as
well as it being quarter end, and as well as interviewing management
accountants. All in all, it will be a busy day.
There is, therefore, a slight chance that emails and phone calls will not
be answered - although we'll try our best. If there's anything urgent, and
you can't get a reply, my mobile number is 07803 505 172.

Hello everyone,
I had a couple of really interesting conversations last week that have led
to some good ideas. I wonder if you might like to take a look and share any
thoughts.
Firstly, I'm in touch with a fairly senior manager of a local authority
library service. We've talked about how Wikipedia is widely used in public
libraries and I wondered how we might engage with those people. I've put
together a draft proposal at
https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Draft_proposal:_Thurrock_Libraries and
would love to get your views.
Secondly, I enjoyed a cup of coffee with Dhaval Vyas last week, an editor
of both English and Gujarati Wikipedias. We explored how the chapter might
successfully reach out to the community of Gujarati editors and potential
editors in the UK. The proposal we ended up with is Wiki Takes Leicester.
This will be a traditional Wiki Takes event with a twist. Take a look at
https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Draft_proposal:_Wiki_Takes_Leicester and
get involved.
Both of these projects, if they go ahead, would serve as very useful pilots
for different reasons. Firstly, public libraries present the chapter with a
great opportunity for large-scale outreach. Secondly, the UK has an
extraordinary rich linguistic diversity. We can, and should, be reaching
out to people who may be interested in learning to edit in
non-English/Welsh languages. The success or otherwise of these initiatives
could go a long way to helping shape future activities in these important
areas.
Your constructive feedback is very much appreciated.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

All,
We've just purchased a hearing loop for the UK chapter, to make it easier
for those with hearing difficulties to partake in discussions and events.
The loop doesn't have a huge range, so it's not good for full conferences,
and is instead best for smaller meetings of 3-4 people.
We'll work to update the various event pages to include this information in
the next few weeks. This loop can be requested by anyone running or
attending events (provided we know who's in charge of it). I'd be really
keen on hearing from people how we can ensure that this bit of kit is
"effectively utilised", and doesn't just sit around gathering dust. Every
time it could be used, we want it to be used. We'd be happy to lend it to
other chapter for short periods too.
All the best,
Richard Symonds

I would hope that we have volunteers in the UK that may be interested in
this outreach programme. An opportunity to deliver an interesting project -
do have a look!

Subject: [Wikitech-l] FOSS Outreach Program for Women: call for candidates,
projects, and mentors
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
PLEASE FORWARD TO WHOEVER MIGHT BE INTERESTED
Wikimedia will participate in the FOSS Outreach Program for Women - Round
7. Interns of this program work full time in an open source project during
4 months.
https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/FOSS_Outreach_Program_**for_Women<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/FOSS_Outreach_Program_for_Women>
Candidates interested are encouraged to add themselves to the table at
https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/Outreach_Program_for_**
Women/Round_7#Candidates<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_Program_for_Women/Round_7#Candidates>-
even if you are still preparing your proposal.
We are actually running late (my fault). The application process is open
until November 11. The internship period goes from December 10 to March 10,
2014.
The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to fund up to 8 interns. This is a
great opportunity for Wikimedia / MediaWiki related projects. Our process
is quite simple: define a project, find the mentors and go for it!
https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/Mentorship_programs/**Possible_projects<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_projects>
https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/Mentorship_programs/**Possible_mentors<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_mentors>
The previous featured projects and confirmed mentors have been moved
respectively to the Raw and Bench sections. If you want to participate in
this OPW round move the entries back to the featured sections.
New projects and mentors are welcome too, of course!
If you have any questions please ask.

Dear all,
I am currently drafting a survey for members - here
<https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_draft…>-
which by the way anyone is welcome to review and critique/edit as they wish
(I'd like to draw it up to a final draft state by mid-next week) It will be
sent out to Wikimedia UK members of which there are about 225.
However, I had aspired to administer a survey following on the from the
main one that asked demographic questions. It would always be anonymous,
and all questions optional, to try and encourage people to complete as much
as they wanted to. The idea would be to get a sense of how diverse our
membership is, and in the long term, tackle under-representation.
One section that I am particularly sensitive about is whether and how we
ask questions about gender identity - the current question draft is
here<https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_draft…>-
and I have been having a discussion on wiki exploring the concerns
here<https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_…>
.
What I would like is for anyone who is affected by these issues as a result
of their gender identity and experience to drop me a private email if they
have any thoughts on the matter.
It boils down to a basic problem of leaving groups invisible by not
monitoring them as a part of community versus intruding into people's
private experiences.
What matters most is that those it could affect have a chance to contribute
to that discussion so I'd be grateful if anyone this relates to gets in
touch - I'm katherine.bavage(a)wikimedia.org.uk
Thanks all!
